In 2024, the Stonehouse Brewery in Shropshire installed its own 400-litre German column still. The brewery is able to make its own wash and there are big plans afoot for exciting whisky releases in the future. While that whisky takes time to age however, the team have been busy crafting an array of other spirits, like this classic London Dry Gin boasting a bold, juniper-forward profile, backed by plenty of botanical citrus and spice.
Crisp layers of oily juniper are backed by zesty notes of lemon peels, a bittersweet touch of orange peel, and warming, botanical spice beneath.
I’m a huge fan of Stonehouse Brewery beer, so I had high hopes for their spirits too, but this really missed the mark. My recommendation would be to stick to the beer (Cambrian is amazing!) but avoid the spirits.
I received this gin as a Christmas present and I was so excited to try it. I thought the label looked nice and I had high expectations. However, the liquid in the bottle let me down. It has a very strong aftertaste, bitter and metallic, somewhat medicinal tasting. Although it tastes like medicine, it also gave me a horrid headache the following day. Overall, it didn’t meet my expectations which is a shame.
I found this gin very bitter tasting. I couldn’t drink it with a regular tonic, instead I had to pair it with either a sweetened tonic or lemonade. Might be good in a cocktail, with lots of fruit for sweetness but not for a G&T.
Just a standard gin. Nothing special. Nothing to write home about.
