    Salcombe Gin Start Point

Salcombe Gin is produced in a 450 litre Arnold Holstein still charmingly named Provident, and made with thirteen botanicals including Macedonian juniper, fresh lemon, lime and red grapefruit peels, cardamom, liquorice, cinnamon bark, chamomile, coriander seeds and cubeb berries. The inspiration for the gin comes from the Salcombe 'fruiters' that brought exotic fruit into Devon from the Azores, West Indies and Mediterranean in the 19th century. Water sourced from Dartmoor is used to bring it down to 44%.

Fun fact: Salcombe is one of the few distilleries in the world accessible by boat!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Citrus and floral aromas and flavours work in harmony with the heady, earthy and resinous pine notes of Macedonian juniper, selected for their high limonene content, combined with the warming spiced citrus notes from English coriander seeds. Cubeb berries from Java provide fruity peppery heat balanced with warming spice from cinnamon bark.

    A 'wow' gin

I had the pleasure of tasting Salcombe gin in Salcombe whilst on holiday a couple of weeks ago. This is a 'wow' gin - excellently made and oozing quality and deliciousness. I had a bottle of one of my favourite gins, Tanqueray 10, with me and comparing the bottle of Salcombe that I bought with it side by side, the T10 was more intensely citrusy. Salcombe is citrusy as well but leans more toward Warner Edwards or even Plymouth in its spicyness. It's more flavoured than Plymouth and has more depth as well as a 'chewyer' mouthfeel. It's very smooth (it tastes like it uses a very high quality base spirit and very high quality botanicals) and makes an excellent martini and a really cracking Negroni (I've never had one where the flavours pop as much as with this gin)! Will definitely be buying this again because as far as I'm concerned, this is up there in the Pantheon of great gins.

    Simply stunning, elegant & balanced

Wow. I was given a bottle of this a week ago from a friend who picked it up whilst on holiday in Salcombe (sorry Master of Malt). This is without doubt the best gin I have ever been fortunate enough to try and therefore deserves a review. It really is exceptional with an amazing balance and layers of flavour. The juniper is definitely there unlike some of these new wave so called gins, but this works in tandem with the fresh citrus, ruby grapefruit being the key one that gives it a citrus zing and just a touch of sweetness. There is a light floral note, but this is very subtle and is countered really well with a layer of warming fruity spice. What is most amazing is the length of finish. It really lingers. Even with tonic in the glass the flavours and wonderful smell were still there after 20 minutes. I have no idea how they have managed that. In summary, an amazing new citrus led gin, which I am sure will go onto to win many awards and became a mainstay in some of the coolest bars around. For me this knocks Tanqueray 10 off my top spot, as it has amazing balance, works brilliantly with tonic and makes an even better Martini than Tanqueray 10. My friend tells me the company behind it have almost finished building a purpose built distillery on the waterfront in Salcombe, which for those who are not familiar with Salcombe, it is the most beautiful coastal town in South Devon. Their big still will be visible to the public from the tasting bar which itself overlooks the water. I can’t wait to get down there to check it out.
