    Dr. Squid Gin

Dr. Squid Gin comes to us from the Pocketful of Stones Distillery in Penzance, which was made using a recipe that features real, no-foolin' squid ink! We squid you not! A rather savoury expression, with a coastal feeling to it, along with a few touches of citrus and spice. If that wasn't cool enough, it also turns bright pink when you mix it with tonic! It comes in a copper flask, engraved with all sorts of flora and fauna. It also looks like the eponymous Dr. Squid is on the label...

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Savoury kitchen herbs, balanced by fresh lemon zest and meadowsweet.

    Palate

Citrus sits at the core, with woody juniper following. Subtly floral at points, and a touch of sea breeze sneaks in later on.

    Finish

    Spring blossom and pine.

    Would not buy again

I was disappointed with this gin. It tastes of the copper jar it comes in, as beautiful as that is i feel it really hinders the taste. Would love to taste from a glass bottle. Would not buy again.

A top gin with a twist

Just bought this. And must say its good. Copper flask it comes in is stunning. Pouring can be a bit tricky, but it smells & tastes great. We paired it with lemon & fever tree Mediterranean tonic. The colour change is not new, but a nice addition. Would buy it again.

    Brilliant squid ink gin!

My Misses bought me this gin for my Christmas, and I got to say it’s a new favourite! Looks great in my home bar, and tastes even better. Love the colour changing effect. Will definitely order more.

    Highly recommended

An absolutely stunning gin, unfortunately we tried this early one evening , we were trying a few different ones that night, couldn’t taste any of the others afterwards, should’ve tried it last,

    Great!

I've been putting this one off for a while as I usually stick to London dry gins and tend to think distilleries with non traditional bottles or expensive branding spend more effort on that than they do their spirits (a little snobby I know). I'm in a number of gin and cocktail groups on Facebook where people kept raving about this, and having previously enjoyed Caspyn Dry from the same distillery, I finally caved and bought a bottle. I got a really strong citrus hit the second I opened the bottle, I presume lemon peel or lime leaves are used. The deep dark purple colour is lovely, to be honest I expected it to look much more artificial, but as it pours the colour is mesmerising. On its own it has a very different mouth feel, which I'm guessing comes from the squid ink, its certainly unique and I really quite liked the sensation. It has a rather savoury flavour, but you can very much still taste the juniper. When mixed with tonic, the purple turns into a lite pink, I know a number of gins do that so nothing special in the colour change, but what I found interesting was how the citrus from the original smell, which wasn't as apparent when drinking straight really comes alive. The mixture of savoury and citrus flavours I thought was really clever and made it very moorish! The bottle is of course stunning and is talked about a lot online, the only thing, I'll add is how intricate and detailed the engraving is, and how many little things you spot each time you look. All in all, a truly lovely gin, and a bit of a lesson for myself about not judging spirits by their bottle, or maybe just being a little less of a snob! Highly recommended!
