Grace O'Malley Heather Infused Irish Gin

This delicious gin from the folks at Grace O'Malley is made with a selection of 14 botanicals from the west coast of Ireland. Heather is accompanied by wild thyme, red clover, blackthorn, bilberry, and rock samphire for a very well balanced gin with a good dose of floral, herbal, and gently coastal character. Serve with tonic over plenty of ice, garnish with fresh herbs and pink grapefruit.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Fresh juniper with herbaceous, grassy vegetal notes, aromatic dried heather, and a touch of gentle salinity.

Good strength not bad but lacking in character ...balance is adrift at sea.

Right. Well a good choice of herbals . But the balance is wrong. This is my fifth attempt at an Irish gin, now I am stuck here .☺️. The other four were well, rubbish. I would give them 3 out of ten at best. Now the problem with this one is simply this....it's a gin named after a pirate queen . With that you want a slap across the face and a bit of tart....Ness. It's says it's rounded and it is. But I've never searched for a rounded gin......this is not a whisky it needs a gin approach to being gin. You know a pirate queen isn't going to give you a soft cuddle is she...that's what you get.....she is going to give you a slap and tell you to man up you big Jessie pants.....that sort of thing. So in essence it's too soft. The strength is good the herbals are quite sound , but it need an edge. It does not have one, it needs better character. Now as someone who knows his phyto chemicals his herbals and their curative properties, all is ok ther it's just it has balance not a character full edge. I put extra lemon and some herb Robert in so it would bite me back a bit. Like a wild sea queen would....and I'm not far away from Westport. So that pushed my decision. I'm giving it 7.5 out of ten because it has good consideration of the phyto chemicals, the .2.5 missing is that pirate slap. The fact it's a Gin !. Not A SOFT WHISKEY.

Nice strength but too soft....needs gravitas.

Well we need to start with context. Ive triede 4 different Irish gins before this , they were like a magnolia Gordons gin.....that means insipid and I would rate at 3 out of ten. Now the description is fair, but I like a gin with a bit of gravitas..an edge, a my thats lush with a tart slap across the face. This isn it, its well rounded as it suggests, thats not what you want with a gin its not a whiskey. You might want to remember that fact. As I help fix folk with au naturals I did not recognise the term Fraughan...meaning bilberry. Thus at the moment I have a glass with extra lemon..(needs a bit of lemon rind if you ask me in the process. Plus I have added Herb Robert...I suggest a bit more tartness from something. I have drunk gins for eons and I know a good un from a bad un. Now Im giving this 7 out of ten, but with the added va va voom of bitterty tartness, It would fair much better. In balance its the best Irish gin I have had in more balance the rest were rubbish.

    Wonderful!

Lots of juniper and then the heather. It is like taking a walk on the moors in early summer. Just need the lambs bleating and the curlews calling. The sunshine and the rain come through in the flavour. G and T supreme. I have tried dozens of gins and this is in my top 3.
