Fruit and spice is a winning combination, so the folks over at Black Lodge Potions took juicy wild strawberries and paired the fruit with black pepper for this balanced expression. One for those with a sweet tooth, and maybe a spicy tooth too, if those exist?
Piney juniper supported by a subtle hint of smoke and sweet, fruity strawberry, with a good crack of black pepper on the finish.
A friend ordered this for me knowing that I'm Gin crazy, a pagan and would love the brand design. I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted it as I was expecting a sugary syrup, but this is a proper gin! Taking the waxed cork off, the smell is amazing. I always try neat first and you get a lovely whack of pepper heat. Then a beautiful fruity sweet strawberry hit. I tried it with some lemonade afterwards and that changes it into what I'd call a refreshing long drink. I give it 4.5 as I don't think perfect exists with anything, but it's close. P.S. Love the Twin Peaks references. Damn fine Gin.
Sadly disappointing, I ran a taste comparison with Beefeater Strawberry gin, directly matching the same mixer/garnish etc to compare. What a shock!, for £16 you can have Beefeater's zingy, fruity, sharp strawberry dry gin. This on the other hand is syrupy, and a bit too sweet. The main problem is that any trace of black pepper is no where to be seen/tasted. To help finish the bottle I added a pinch of black pepper to each drink I mixed, it helped, and gave it some of the missing edge. It's not undrinkable but, not £38 worth of fruit gin.
