A gin from Ballyvolane House named after Bertha, a Droimeann cow from Kerry said to have been the oldest in the world when she died aged 48 in 1993. The gin uses whey alcohol from Irish dairies as its base with locally foraged botanicals.
The concept originates from Ballyvolane being the Gaelic for 'the place of springing heifers' and botanicals include juniper, coriander, bitter orange, grapefruit, sweet orange, lemon, lime, liquorice, orris, angelica, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, cumin, almond, elderflower, and sweet woodruff.
Almond, hay, dried juniper and orange peel, too. Floral angelica. Cumin spiciness develops.
Spice arrives first, with plenty of clove and cardamom. Soon becomes creamy and vanilla-y, joined by fresh citrus peels.
Slightly oily juniper. Lime and liquorice root.
Absolutely love this gin ... one of the best that I have ever had . The story about the cow , who lived in Sneem , co Kerry , is true according to my cousins who still live there . It’s worth a try ..
Just tried this gin in a gin bar in Bath it reminds me of the taste of cream soda for some reason but I absolutely love it with a bit of chilli in the glass gives it a great taste
Very soft and velvety and an almost almond finish. I loved it! Could even drink it neat. I wish the bottoms I have smelt, smelt of this gin (references to previous reviews).
Definitely think this is one to try before you buy! I’m a real gin lover...favourite Irish gin being Boatyard, but really want to try this just wasn’t sure. Thankfully I found it in a local bar and definitely won’t be be purchasing. It was ok but only as a one off. My friend also didn’t enjoy it .
Tried this the first time as it was recommended by the friendly barman at Atlas Bar in Manchester. He also recommended the Thomas Henry Cherry Blossom Tonic. Wow a match made in heaven ***** Tried now its time to Buy a bottle or two.
