History
The distillery started in the late 1990s. At that time, Canadian whisky was less known than Scottish and American types. John Hall, who was a winemaker, started Forty Creek. He wanted to bring a winemaker's touch to whisky-making. His winemaking background led the distillery to focus on each grain's unique features and the skill of blending.
How They Make Whisky
The distilling process is unique. It distils corn, barley, and rye separately, then ages them in oak barrels. This is different from most Canadian whiskies, which blend before ageing. Ageing the grains separately lets each one's character develop. After ageing, the whiskies are blended. This creates a complex and rich flavour.
New Ideas in Whisky Making
The distillery is known for trying new things. They have used different types of barrels for finishing their whiskies. These include sherry, port, and even cabernet sauvignon barrels. This has led to a range of unique products, each with its own style.
Awards
Forty Creek's focus on quality and new ideas has won many awards, both in Canada and internationally. Their whiskies, like Forty Creek Barrel Select and Forty Creek Confederation Oak, are known for their quality, complexity, and unique taste.
Community and Environment
Forty Creek Distillery is part of its local community. They get ingredients locally as much as possible and focus on sustainable methods. The distillery is more than a business. It is part of the Grimsby community and helps with local events and charities.
Visitors
The distillery offers great tours for visitors. These tours show how they make whisky, from mashing and fermentation to distilling and ageing. Visitors can also try different types of whisky and learn what makes each one special.
Growth
Forty Creek has grown a lot since it started. Its success has led to more production and wider distribution. As it grows, Forty Creek keeps its focus on skilled quality. They make sure each bottle meets their high standards.
Looking Ahead
Forty Creek is always trying new things. It keeps looking for new methods and flavours, always pushing traditional whisky-making boundaries. With a focus on quality and new ideas, Forty Creek is set to stay a leader in the Canadian whisky industry.
