This is a wonderful ready-made, vintage Manhattan cocktail from The Handmade Cocktail Company's Ultimate range. Bottled in 2012, this fine libation was made with rye whiskey which was matured for more than 25 years, as well as some exquisite red vermouths from the 1960s and 1970s. It was finished off with handmade cocktail bitters too!
The concept of the ‘Vintage Cocktail’ range is simple – you get all the ingredients for a superb cocktail pre-mixed, all you have to do is pour it over ice, stir, then strain off into your glass and garnish (in this instance with a slice of orange peel). Each bottle carries a stamp showing its year of manufacture.
To serve, simply fill a tumbler with ice, pour in a large measure of The Old Fashioned Cocktail, stir, and add a twist of orange peel (expressed over the glass).
Black pepper and oily rye spices. Slightly herbal, with those vermouth notes coming through. A little sage, with morello cherries and creamy custard.
Sweet spice and pepper, marasca cherry and a big dose of toasted oak sweetness. Vermouth is very nicely balanced.
Long, with the bitters taking the fore - it all becomes very spicy and bittersweet, with a hint of vanilla on the tail.
