Master of Cocktails – The Spiced Black Truffle Palmetto

Master of Cocktails The Spiced Black Truffle Palmetto

This week’s drink (a day later than usual due to the bank holiday) is a twist on a Palmetto recipe, using the amazing Rumbullion! XO rum along with a couple of superb vermouths, and Bitter Bastards Black Truffle Bitters. The Black truffle notes add a superb, almost ethereal balance to the drink that makes it probably my favourite creation of the last few months.

It’s a simple drink to make, which I’m sure will be welcome after last week’s (and next week’s) more prep-heavy drinks.

Our International Wine & Spirit Competition 2014 Winnings

International Wine & Spirit Competition 2014

The folks here at MoM Towers aren’t going to win the World Cup anytime soon. Our team, Bitter Bastards FC, are just a few players short of a full squad and therefore wouldn’t qualify, so the German team has nothing to be worried about… Yet. We’re also not going to win Wimbledon, despite a small subset of us being pretty gosh-darn good at squash (they’re basically the same sport, one just has more passive aggressive connotations and a wall). Oscars? Probably not. Grammys? Unlikely. Nobel Peace Prize? Doubtful at best. Medals for making stunning drinks? Now you’re talking!

That’s right, that little preamble is leading up to us proudly showing off the medals our products scooped up at the prestigious International Wine & Spirits Competition 2014. We’re always immensely excited and grateful when the products we make are commended by the highly knowledgeable tasters behind these awarding bodies – it really does mean the world to us.

New Product – Rumbullion! XO 15yo

Professor Cornelius Ampleforth Rumbullion! XO 15 Years Old

It’s hard to believe, but the original Rumbullion! hasn’t even been with us for 3 years yet.

Initially launched in November 2011, and followed by a punchier Navy-Strength version late in 2012 (you’ll want to click on that one – it’s got explosives in it), it felt like high time we stepped up and produced a super-premium version.

With this in mind, development and sourcing work for this ultra-aged expression began over 2 years ago – it’s taken us this long to find a reliable source of exceptional, superbly-aged Caribbean rum that fits and compliments the flavour-profile of the original offering.

Master of Cocktails – The Palmetto

Master of Cocktails The Palmetto

So – the clocks have changed, and we’ve either gained an hour, lost an hour, or gone back in time. It’s unclear which… Either way, it’s time for #MasterofCocktails! This week’s drink is a Palmetto.

Traditionally, this drink would be made with rum, vermouth and bitters, but as we’re using Rumbullion! There’s no need for the bitters in this one. I’m using the Navy-Strength, as that’s what’s behind the bar, but you could certainly use the regular stuff. No problem either way.

Master of Cocktails – Eggnog

Master of Cocktails Eggnog cocktail

Last week, we gave you the choice between a classic summer cocktail or something more wintery and, overwhelmingly, the good people of twitter voted for a winter #MasterofCocktails option. So, last night we made the ultimate Eggnog!

The clocks had just gone back and the #UKStorm2013 was approaching so it did indeed seem the perfect time to batten down the hatches and mix up a classic winter warmer whilst we waited for all this to blow over.

The entire recipe can be found below, and apologies that it’s been posted slightly later than usual – the bloody storm has evidently even affected our blog posts!

On to the ‘nog!

Oops!… We did it again: IWSC Results (International Wine & Spirits Competition)

Master of Malt 30 Year Old Speyside IWSC 2013 Tasting

Another week, another set of awards results announced! This time from the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC), “the premier competition of its kind in the world”. (I know, I know, they can’t all be the best – and they do indeed have similar sounding names – but this is another one of the really, really BIG competitions. Important stuff.)

As well as the usual Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, there are also Gold Outstanding and Silver Outstanding Medals at the IWSC, with a huge score of 90-100 out of 100 required for a Gold Medal and Gold Outstanding Medals only being awarded at the judges’ discretion! Welcome to big school!

Feis Ile 2013: Day 5 (Bowmore) – Message in Bottle Winners & Flaming Bows

Bart back to the future

It seems that everywhere we’ve gone this week people have been talking about one thing in particular: the mysterious bottles that have washed up on the shores of Islay containing messages written by “Doc” Emmett L. Brown way back in 1859!

This was, as you may know unless you’ve been living under a rock (you do read all my blogs with avid enthusiasm, right?), part of our third competition for Feis Ile 2013. Everybody who found a bottle was told to meet at the clock tower at Laphroaig distillery at 12 noon on Wednesday 29th May 2013 – their prize for doing so was a full bottle of That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s brand new Caol Ila (worth £54.95) AND the chance to feature on our next cultish comic book-style label!

New Product: Rumbullion! Navy Strength (or ‘how to nearly blow your fingers off’)

So. We launched our Navy Strength Bathtub Gin about a month or so ago, and it’s already doing really rather well. It’s kind of a given that we had to follow this up with a Navy Strength version of the incredibly popular vanilla-and-christmas-spices-laden spiced rum – Rumbullion! It’s almost* like there’s some sort of planning going on.

For the Navy Strength version of Rumbullion, we’ve taken the same basic recipe, and simply scaled up the vanilla, sugar and spice content in line with the ABV (ie – it’s not intentionally spicier and punchier, like the Bathtub is). The reason for this is pretty straight-forward – Rumbullion! is already a pretty aggressively spiced little rum as it is, and the Navy Strength version was more than capable of standing up to the initial ABV at the same proportional concentration.

Incidentally – if you’ve not tried the Navy Strength Bathtub Gin yet – it’s sort of like being kicked in the face by a Gin-Soaked Santa Claus. Really quite fantastic, and absolutely laden with Christmas spices – it don’t ‘alf pack a punch.
