Ledaig 42 Dusgadh

Crikey it’s been busy around here lately! Father’s Day is upon us and we also have imminent releases coming out the wazoo! Sometimes you simply have to drop everything though, for a short while at least, because, just occasionally, a very special whisky demands that.

A 42 year old Ledaig? Yeah, that’ll certainly do it. This 1972 vintage is the oldest whisky ever release of the peated single malt from Tobermory distillery, and Burn Stewart informs us that the earliest possible date they could release another Ledaig that’s at least 40 years old would be in 2036! Special, this most definitely is.

The Lost Distilleries Blend

For those of you not blessed with omniscience or immortality, window 24 of Whisky Advent Calendar offers an exciting opportunity to taste some historic whiskies. And if you do happen to be omnipotent or immortal? Well it’s still an opportunity to taste some jolly delicious old and rare whisky!

The Lost Distilleries Blend was named World’s Best Blended Whisky 2014 at Whisky Magazine’s World Whiskies Awards and does exactly what it says on the tin (or at least the bottle and handsome box). It’s made up solely with whiskies from sadly now closed distilleries, many of whom have become legendary, with batch six containing malt from Port Ellen, Mosstowie, Caperdonich, Glenisla, Imperial, Glen Mhor and Brora, alongside grain from Port Dundas.

Glenfiddich Gallery

Well this one’s been teed up perfectly really following last week’s post on The Glenlivet, and specifically how they’re catching the Glenfiddich in terms of sales whilst placing emphasise on their recent and historical innovation. So Glenfiddich, your move it seems. And here it is: Glenfiddich Gallery, a bespoke online whisky service where you can discover cask strength malts that match your personal tastes and also design the bespoke packaging your whisky will come in!

Whilst there is a certain award-winning online retailer that’s provided the opportunity to personalise both the labels and the liquid of your whisky for some time now *ahem*, this is an incredibly exciting step for a leading single malt brand to take.

Whisky Santa Pug Yamazaki Sherry 2013

Since I began granting one Christmas wish per day, there’s been one product in particular that’s been rather popular on your wishlists. Some chap in a panama hat with fluorescent eyes said it was rather good or something. Not much call for panama hats at the North Pole, you know. Still, if there’s one thing I’ve learned travelling all around the globe every year it’s that it takes all sorts!

The Glenlivet The Winchester Collection Vintage 1964

Last week I was fortunate enough to taste an upcoming release from The Glenlivet, the second best selling single malt Scotch whisky in the world. It’s a limited edition 50 year old vintage whisky release – the first in a series of 50 year olds (!) that are to be called The Winchester Collection.

Matured in a single American oak hogshead (as far as I understand from my chat with Brand Ambassador Phil Huckle) this speyside whisky was laid down back in 1964 by none other than Captain Bill Smith-Grant, the final distilling descendant of the distillery’s founder, George Smith. The Winchester Collection therefore represents a special piece of history for The Glenlivet, a final liquid link with the family that started it all back in 1824.

Glenfarclas 60 Year Old

Back in the 1950s, when George Grant’s daddy was quite literally still in nappies, George’s grandfather was busy laying down stock for the future and to this day the family-run independent distillery and its followers have been reaping the rewards of this policy with some incredible releases.

In 2007 they launched The Family Casks range showcasing some of the best single casks in their warehouses with vintages ranging from 1952 (!) to 1994 on release. Glenfarclas‘ envious inventory of maturing stock then saw them able to add a 40 Year Old to their core range in 2010. How many distilleries can boast that?

Following a couple of 1953 vintage releases over the last couple of years taken from casks that were the very oldest whisky casks in the inventory (like this and this), the inevitable has now happened. Glenfarclas have released an official 60 Year Old bottling for the first time ever.

Tales From The Isle Laphroaig Feis Ile

Greetings traveller,

They say that the devil no longer visits Islay, which is why one policeman is sufficient for a population of thousands. We’ll be taking a closer look at exactly why Satan might be staying away from the isle tomorrow, but just because the lord of darkness is absent, that doesn’t mean you’re necessarily safe from the horrors of hell!

Laphroaig, of course, is a distillery that’s seen its fair share of horror with former owner and co-founder Donald Johnston having fallen into a vat of raging hot spent lees in 1847! That’s ten whole years after the devil’s supposed final visit and poor old Donald tragically died from his injuries shortly after.

Ardbeg Auriverdes

So – it’s that time of year again isn’t it? I checked my calendar the other day, and realised it’s 6 weeks until Feis Ile. 6 weeks. I’ve got no idea who’s stealing all the time, but as whoever it is takes with one hand, they surely give with the other – we’re only 7 weeks away from the release of this year’s Ardbeg Day special edition.

This year’s offering is called ‘Auriverdes’ – a portmanteau of the latin ‘Aurum’ (Gold) and Portuguese ‘Verdes’ (Green) – Gold for the colour of the whisky, and Green for the iconic green* bottle in which Ardbeg is presented.

Why Portuguese, I hear you ask? Well apparently there’s some sort of kickball tourney on later this year in Brazil? Not really my sort of thing, but I’m sure Jake will use it as an excuse to bore the crap out of you / keep you entertained (delete per your preference).

Imagine a world where you could taste any whisky you wanted, instantly, for free, and in the comfort of your own multi-million-pound caravan-home or luxury yachts-vessel. And just picture yourself, if you will, browsing an immense digital library with fine single malts flashing majestically before your very eyes like that bit in Minority Report.

The time is 9pm, the day is today, and you’re sitting in a wingback chesterfield armchair. It’s slightly old – still maintains its shape, but the burgundy leather has become softer and more forgiving. In essence, you’re the mayor of comfort city. It’s liquor o’clock, and Mrs Hammersworth, the nice lady who looks after you, is strapping a slightly cumbersome though thoroughly modern-looking headset onto your face. The device, pictured below, is the groundbreaking “Joculus Snift” – a unique multi-sensory media experience which stimulates four of the five senses with state-of-the-art (SOTA) technology.
