Last month we joined Diageo to taste the Special Releases 2018 cohort – but there was one expression we were asked to keep under wraps. Until now. The mysterious 10th Scotch whisky expression is… Cladach!
‘What IS Cladach?’, we hear you cry. No, it is not the first release from a secret new distillery (although like many new releases it doesn’t carry an age statement). It is a blended malt from six coastal distilleries: Caol Ila, Clynelish, Lagavulin, Oban, Inchgower and Talisker. And it’s delicious.
Diageo and HBO have announced The Game of Thrones Single Malt Scotch Whisky Collection, with more details to come over the coming months.
It’s all a bit mysterious at the moment – like that bit in seasons five and six where Arya Stark spent what seemed like centuries in the Hall of Faces – but Diageo has released a short film on social media announcing a Game of Thrones single malt collection. It will feature eight whiskies: Lagavulin, Oban, Singleton, Talisker, Cardhu, Royal Lochnagar, Dalwhinnie and Clynelish.
Back in January we brought you news that International Scotch Day was making a riotous return for 2018. Well, tomorrow’s the day! From at-home cocktails to heading to your favourite bar, there are a whole host of ways you can get involved and raise a dram to all things Scotch…
A celebration of everything that makes Scotch, Scotch – International Scotch Day is back for a second outing, and the celebrations are set to be bigger than ever. On 8 February, Scotch fans in more than 70 countries will be able to join the collective party, with activities spanning at-home dram pouring and cocktail making to distillery open days, fancy red-carpet galas, and more. And we’ll be following the action right here on the MoM Blog! [UPDATE: Today’s the day! Keep up to date with all the International Scotch Day goings on in today’s blog post.]
“We want people to be thinking, drinking and talking about Scotch,” Donald Colville, Diageo’s global malts ambassador, told us in the run-up to the event. “It is very much about recruiting new people to the category but also giving those who absolutely love Scotch whisky, the connoisseurs, and the real lovers of Scotch, the opportunity to enjoy International Scotch Day as well.”
We know exactly where we can find lovers of all things whisky: right here on the MoM blog! So here’s the International Scotch Day low-down, the whos, wheres and hows of the day, and most importantly, the details of where you can follow all the action.

[Update: He’s now giving gifts away at the checkout too!]
Guess who is back… Back once again… #WhiskySanta is back! Tell all your friends and loved ones. Ho ho ho! A bit of the M&M-style wrap for you there. I like to stay current.
That’s right, your favourite festive, omniscient, supernatural, heavily-bearded being is back from his holibobs. I may have only had ten months off after last year’s festivities (during which I even received a shiny ISC award) but a tinsel-covered alarm clock has gone off somewhere and I’m feeling extremely generous once again! Time to make some lists and check them twice – lists of people using #WhiskySanta, that is – before granting one wish per day for you lucky people for a second year running!

THE SPECIAL RELEASES ARE NOW LIVE AND CAN BE FOUND HERE!
Got a letter from Diageo the other day. Opened and read it. It was about their Special Releases. They wanted us for their tasting, or whatever. Picture me turning down drams, I said “Hell yeah!”.
We will indeed be stocking all of the 2013 Diageo Special Releases shortly – and yes – they will all be available as 3cl Sample Drams too. You’re welcome. They should be with us any day now, but for more details as they land be sure to keep your eyes glued to the @MasterOfMalt twitter account.

‘International Port Ellen Day’ 2013 (#iPed2013), organised by the one and only Jon Beach, took place on the Friday during Fèis Ìle this year.
First though, we paid a visit to Bunnahabhain and even solved the mystery of what really happened to the nearby Wyre Majestic, now shipwrecked off the coast…
Every year on the 5th of November here in the UK we set off fireworks and burn an effigy of a man who tried to overthrow a king who enforced religious oppression against Catholics living in England. To an outsider, Guy Fawkes night looks like an insane, cult-like pagan ritual, but really it’s just about merriment, the partaking of yummy winter cocktails, and watching fireworks in awe and wonderment with their loud noises and pretty colours (we’re easily amused).
For the unofficial Master of Malt 2011 Firework More…
