It’s (probably) the spookiest weekend of the year, but before you cover yourself in fake blood and wander around with a plastic hatchet “lodged” in your head, fill that noggin with news from The Nightcap.

Halloween is awkwardly on a Wednesday this year, meaning if you’re not getting spooky on the actual day, you have to make a choice whether to celebrate it this weekend or next weekend. However, since there would be a clash with Bonfire Night (and no one wants to mix pretend spookiness with actual explosions), we expect many of you will be donning your costumes this weekend. Before you do so, we’ve got the low-down on this week’s booze news all here in The Nightcap.

Whisky Advent Calendar

Into the final week of #WhiskyAdvent we go and today it’s time for our first grain whisky from The Whisky Advent Calendar by Drinks by the Dram

Now, most of you will have William Grant & Sons’ Girvan Patent Still Proof Strength. As mentioned on Day 2 though, these advent calendars have been extraordinarily popular this year, with sales surpassing all forecasts! This means that on a small number of days not everybody could have the exact same dram. Everyone does have a Girvan today, but some of you may be enjoying a Girvan 20 Year Old 1993 from Douglas Laing’s Clan Denny range, or indeed a Girvan 21 Year Old 1994 from their Old Particular range (both excellent independent bottlings).

Master of Cocktails Salted Caramel Old Fashioned

Right then, cocktail fans. For this week’s #MasterofCocktails, we’re going to be making a Salted Caramel Old-Fashioned recipe. Yum yum.

If you’re planning on making along with this week’s #MasterofCocktails, you’re going to need to do a bit of prep a day or so in advance. This includes making the Salted Caramel, dissolving the sugar and salt (as well as fat-washing the whisky), filtering it and adding the bitters.

This will leave you with very little left to do when the time comes to actually serve your Salted Caramel Old-Fashioned, which is quite handy indeed.

Master of Cocktails Flower Arranging With Mr Gumby

Hi there folks. If you tuned into the @MasterOfMalt Twitter feed on Sunday night for another edition of #MasterofCocktails, you may have noticed it was a bit late. Sorry about that. Been doing a spot of flooring. My whole house smells like young Bourbon. I quite like it.

Right then. Onto today’s cocktail. This’n’s called ‘Flower Arranging with Mr Gumby’. Reasons for the name will become apparent very soon.

David Beckham Haig Club Grain Whisky

This is really a follow up to my previous post ‘Will Grain Whisky be promoted to the Big League as David Beckham signs for Haig Club?‘, where I talk more generally about single grain, Haig Club, and David Beckham as well as taste the Girvan 25yo. Since then a couple of things have happened. Firstly, the brand and the whisky are out there now – from teaser shots where you don’t even get to see Becks’ face back in July, to us having the whisky for sale on the site, to the Global Launch at the start of October through to the release of the UK television advert at the end of last week. The other thing that’s happened is that I’ve actually got around to tasting it now, finally!

SPEY Whisky Michael Owen

We’re a little late to this one (busy ‘n’ that), but yet another footballm’n has in fact entered the whisky world. Following Haig Club’s signing of ‘Sir’ David Beckham, SPEY have now snapped up his old England team-mate Michael Owen! (Meanwhile, Sven has wine covered – surely it’s only a matter of time before we’re hit with a Rio Ferdinand Cognac…)

I’ll cover the interesting history of SPEY whisky below, but first allow this to sink in for a second: Michael Owen is the Global Brand Ambassador for a single malt Scotch whisky.

David Beckham

Ah, David Beckham. What a fine figure of a man. And now one who’s set to join the whisky industry as the face of Haig Club single grain whisky (from Cameronbridge distillery) as well as becoming actively involved in the marketing of the brand along with his manager Simon ‘Spice Girls’ Fuller. A couple of stories here then – massive celebrity endorsement of a Scotch whisky, and the planned launch of another single grain following William Grant & Sons’ Girvan Patent Still.

You may have seen the Girvan range launch at the end of last year – it’s the first single grain from William Grant, or the first official bottling from Girvan, or the first bottling “under the emblem” of the Girvan still… or something.
