Are you familiar with the teaspoon trick in whisky?

No, not a cocktail recipe. We’re talking about teaspoon malts – one of Scotch whisky’s most delightfully petty secrets.

What is a teaspoon malt?

It goes like this: take a single malt, add a literal teaspoon of another distillery’s whisky, and legally, you can no longer call it a single malt.

Why do this? Because distilleries don’t always want their names attached to indie bottlings, especially if those bottlings are cheaper, older, or better than their official releases.

Enter Westport. There’s no distillery called Wesport. It basically means not quite Glenmorangie. This is Glenmorangie with a splash of something else (Glen Moray), just enough to rename it, but not enough to make a blind bit of difference to the flavour.

What is a teaspoon malt? Let’s explain.

Westport. 21 years. One cask. No marketing fluff.

This single cask was filled back in 1997 and has been maturing quietly for over two decades in a refill bourbon cask before 134 bottles were filled in 2018 at 49.6% ABV.

That means mellow orchard fruit, rich malt, vanilla, subtle spice, and an elegance only age can offer.

This is Glenmorangie on its day off. No tie, no PR gloss, just good spirit and a long nap.

Why should you care?

Teaspoon malts are whiskies bottled under a pseudonym. Which often means you get top distillery quality without paying the brand-name tax. That’s what we have here.
