Customs Charges

Sad but true, national governments want their pound of flesh, and they take a cut of all commerce crossing your borders.

There’s no way to legally avoid this, so it’s going to be the same wherever you order from unless they’re smuggling it into your country illegally.

To provide you with a general idea though, we have outlined below the different types of fees you can typically expect to pay:

  • DHL customs clearance administration fee: £15 per order (a rip off, we know). Worth noting that because this is per order, it’s cheaper to spread it across more bottles. This will soon be reduced to £5 per order.
  • Customs duty: Tax imposed on goods when they are transported across international borders.
  • Excise Duty: Usually a fixed amount per litre of pure alcohol for spirits.
  • VAT / AVT / GST: Value Added / Added Value tax / Goods and Services Tax

We can’t promise your country won’t invent more charges to slap on, but these are all the ones we know about…

Here are some worked examples of the usual import costs due for a range of countries we ship to:

In each case, we have calculated the import costs for both 1 bottle and 6 x 70cl bottles at 40% ABV each retailing for £45.

Obviously, because some of these costs apply only once to the whole order, the cost per bottle drops a lot as the number of bottles in the order increases.  Just sayin’ 😉

Australia
Fee Example 1

1 x £45 70cl bottle at 40%

Example 2

6 x £45 70cl bottles at 40%

DHL Fee £15.00 £15.00
Customs Duty £2.25 £13.50
Excise duty £14.33 £86.02
VAT/ AVT/ GST £10.55 £45.85
Estimated Total Due £42.13 £160.37
Total Cost Per Bottle £42.13 £26.73

Germany
Fee Example 1

VAT/ AVT/ GST £16.55 £66.27
Estimated Total Due £34.69 £100.11
Total Cost Per Bottle £34.69 £16.69

South Korea
Fee Example 1

1 x £45 70cl bottle at 40%

Example 2

6 x £45 70cl bottles at 40%

DHL Fee £15.00 £15.00

Excise duty £65.52 £251.28
VAT/ AVT/ GST £15.65 £60.02
Estimated Total Due £96.17 £326.30
Total Cost Per Bottle £96.17 £54.38

Singapore
Fee Example 1

1 x £45 70cl bottle at 40%

Example 2

6 x £45 70cl bottles at 40%

DHL Fee £15.00 £15.00
Customs Duty £0.00 £0.00
Excise duty £14.43 £86.60
VAT/ AVT/ GST £7.38 £30.49
Estimated Total Due £36.81 £132.09
Total Cost Per Bottle £36.81 £22.02

Again, these are just examples based on our best understanding of how customs charges work in each of these countries – if it gets to the border and they decide to charge an anti-fun tax there’s not much we can do about it.  Sorry 🙁

Please feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions on the above or want further clarity on the import charges that you’ll likely get hit with and we’ll do our best to help!

To share my experience regarding tax duties: for a delivery in Belgium, on an order of an advent calendar of 120€, I had to pay 80€ in tax duties… I understand that masterofmalt can’t do anything about it but, in my opinion, they should communicate even more transparently about it. This post should be linked directly in every page product or in the order summary. It is great that this page exists but in my opinion, it is hidden too much in the Q&A sections. If I had this information initially, I must admit that I would not have ordered…

Well if I was in the UK buying my products and then flew to Switzerland I would have to pay no duty as we have a tax free allowance. If these were shipped by post with a declaration sticker giving the worth I may not have to pay anything or they may charge a handling fee but only if they decide to check the parcel and the once they let through are for free (nothing illegal here) The problem is DHL, they are cashing on it.

I think this blog post is in dire need of updating; the examples seem overly optimistic. I just got an invitation to pay a 52.59 EUR Duty/Tax charge on a 64.68 EUR order (46.72 EUR bottles + 17.96 EUR shipping) That’s a 81.3% surcharge – way more than I calculated it would be. Even worse, in the end, I will have paid 151% on top of the price of the bottles to get them to 320 km from their place of origin… The main cause of this issue is that the items I bought were heavily discounted; for duty/tax purposes, Master of Malt made a separate “Export Invoice”, which I didn’t get to see when I agreed to pay for my order, but which listed the items at full price. After my initial shock, I did some research and it is indeed the seller’s obligation to make an Export Invoice on which everything is listed at “proper value”, which means without discounts. So it seems Master of Malt simply followed the applicable laws. My beef is that during checkout, they should make the customer aware of the number that appears on the Export Invoice; few people would think that the charges are calculated on a different (higher) amount that what was actually paid for the goods, which makes for a nasty surprise. Also, I understand the logic of the authorities to calculate duties on the “proper value”, but it seems that they also want me to pay VAT on the “proper value”, which is absurd; if I buy a discounted product in a store, I pay VAT on the discounted price, not the pre-discount price. This might be out of Master of Malt’s hands, but it greatly aggravates the problem and should probably be mentioned in the examples on the blog post. Another (smaller) contribution to the higher-than-expected charge is that not only the “DHL customs clearance administration fee” was never lowered to 5 GBP (as mentioned in the blog post), but additional VAT is raised on the 15 GBP fee (which they now cryptically call “PaymentDefermentRisk”), increasing it to 18.15 GPB (or 20.6 EUR). I guess I should consider myself lucky that they stopped raising taxes-on-VAT-on-fees at some point so that the charge didn’t go up to infinity, but this was a nasty surprise nevertheless. I know there’s a warning about “crazy charges” with a link to this blog post, but reality is even much worse, so I think it should be updated.

Is this basically an update to the blog post from 2019 where you announced you will temporarily not be able to ship to the EU? From what I understand, at least shipping to Germany is possible again now – how about other EU countries? Would be great to get an update on that!
