Beautifully crafted Bas-Armagnac from Baron de Sigognac. The company owns one short column still which is almost a century old, and it produces around 50-60 casks a year.
Very supple with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, sweet vanilla notes and a lovely array of fresh flowers and orange peel.
Rich and earthy with notes of conserves and peels, butterscotch, sweet spices, oak.
A superb finish with marzipan, hazelnut and custard.
Smooth, warming, touch of spice, nicely rounded, I get a faint whiff of liquorice
Like a previous reviewer, im a whisky drinker and like to try different brandies for a change, and this is surely a superb example at a decent price. Give it a go, you wont regret it.
I buy this as a birthday present for a friend. The only time I taste it is when I go to Hambleton Hall for "lunch for less" it is a superb brandy which tastes as described above.
I've put the above because I'm not going to tell you I'm experienced with brandy when I'm not really. I took a punt on trying a well matured Armagnac. This is what I am getting: On the eye: Amber +1 Perhaps a bit more orange-coloured than your average single malt. No idea if there is any colouring going on. On the nose: raisins, honeysuckle, violets, plenty of vanilla, very delicate spice note - mace maybe?, something slightly creamy, slight note of banana, orange blossom. Quite interesting - you can breath this in a bit more deeply than a whisky. On the palate: lemon zest, apricots, something quite sweet like a sugared almond. The mouth feel is not as thick as a whisky and the flavour is quite delicate I'm disinclined to add water. And to finish: Cloves, plum stones, grapes, bit of fruity sourness (oranges?) and a bit of sugared almond again. The nose is the main event - don't miss it!
I suffer from tinnitus and this lovely drink helps me get to sleep,apart from that it is the best ever alcoholic drink I have ever tasted
