Penderyn Sherrywood is matured in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks - a change from their classic expression, which is finished in Madeira casks.
Heaps of fresh apples and pears! Sweet candy floss, creamy vanilla, oak and prunes.
Barley sugar sweets, Ryvita crackers and sherried sultanas, hints of peach and creamy malt throughout.
Peppery dry, creamy butter fudge and yet more pepper prickle on the finish!
I toured Penderyn a few years ago and it's been one of my favourite whiskey since. This sherrywood finish is excellent.
Light apple juice in colour, the first thing you pick up on the nose is a cloying honey and shortbread cream sweetness, it's absolutely overpowering. Along with this there's that typical sherry dried fruit. Like the Madiera cask, the sweetness almost smells artificial, like there's something 'off' about it. On the taste, the dominant thing is spice. Cinnamon, ginger and some white pepper batter your tongue. Once that subsides, that horrible cloying sweetness returns. The finish is very tanin, overstewed tea, and a woody oak. Not for me this one, afraid my sample ended up down the sink.
I personally Love the Penderyn range of whiskeys and even though this is not my favourite from them (Madeira) the sherrywood is a hugely close second. Even though some of the comments here don’t do it justice or even try to put you off, I would advise people to try it.
I taste a lot of whisky, I run tastings, I love this!! The sweetness makes it smooth and flavoursome. The awards say it all!!
Wow, this is really unique. It's really sweet, tastes like cotton candy with a little spice and sparkling/fizzy sourness is the best I can describe this. Cotton candy mixed with sour fizz on steroids. Unique, lots of flavour, smooth, long finish and I love it.
