Lagavulin 1991 Distillers Bottling Note
When Lagavulin decided to produce a 'finished' whisky - The Distillers Edition, there were doubters who thought nothing could be a match for the pungent strength of Lagavulin. Those sceptics were unfamiliar with the might of Pedro-Ximenez. We love this 1991 distilled Lagavulin, a great digestif.
The nose is rich and full. The coastal, salt tang is big with feinty notes. There are herbal tones and rubber notes. Bitter Seville marmalade and notes of solid smoke. The palate is very smoky with burnt wood and smoked meats. Notes of rolling tobacco with requisite honeyed notes, arak, winter spice, coastal notes; sea spray and seaweed. The finish is long and smoked with a touch of sweetness.
Lovely after dinner dram
Had this with a filter coffee after dinner. Perfect digestif; thick, sweet, possibly the easiest Lagavulin. Not complex, just syrupy smooth, light smoke, chewy and warming.
Beautiful
The classic Islay peat and smoke profile balances delicately against the PX influences making a perfect balance of flavors. This is my favorite Islay expression so far.

A gorgeous single malt
I am primarily a rum fan but I really enjoy many Scotches. This totally reminds me of a scenario if Lagavulin 16 were married with Dos Maderas PX rum = a VERY delicious Islay 'finished' whisky. I'm going to buy as many of these as I can for the colleciton but it's good to know new versions are stilling coming out. Easily one of my favorites and will probably remain so.
