Ben's Blend Bottling Note
In Christmas of 2010, we ran a competition to celebrate Compass Box's 10th anniversary. The winners got to make their own whisky with a little help from John Glaser, Compass Box's master blender. Ben, our sales director, tagged along and joined the winners for a spot of dinner, and blended a whisky of his own. It was handsomely wax-dipped and packaged in one of the finest bottles we ever did see, and it is really rather tasty. We thought we'd make some samples of it and popped it on the site for all to try. Having just Skyped Ben for more information about this delicious blend, all we could glean was that it "probably contained some Dailuaine" and also "some really dark looking stuff (because that's the best kind of whisky)". Hopefully that helps...
Nose: Very intense and spicy. Hints of mixed nuts and dried fig, a little black treacle, molasses and applewood-smoked items. Some sweetness, and just a hint of coal dust. Brandy butter too.
Palate: Very, very sweet. Oily and punchy, with an explosion of notes of candy floss, toffee apples and hints of woodsmoke. Nutmeg and various other sweet spices, 151 proof rum and apple crumble with lashings of melted icecream.
Finish: : A long, intense, sherry-rich finish with just a touch of rancio developing to give it a little truffle-like note. Divine.
Overall: : It pains us to write this, as it’ll certainly go straight to Ben’s head, but this is one of the best things we’ve ever tasted (and not just whisky either, just out of all the things)…
