Single Malt
Scotland
1 Jan 2000

An 8 year old bottling this Benromach single malt was distilled in 2000 and finished in Madeira casks and exhibits all the character one would hope for from a dessert wine cask. A thick, chewable dram.
Fruits: in both dried and juicy form. Honey. Stewed fruits, mulled wine perhaps.
Spicy, dessert wine, fruitcake. Winter berry compote.
Oaky, berries.

Nose: Dried fruit (dried peaches?), light smoke, toffee, faint varnish Palate: Rush of smoke up front, medium body, rush of alcohol after the smoke, spicy, malty, then toffee, dried fruit, and nuttiness Finish: Spicy, woody, dried peaches, malty, hint of oil/varnish, nutty. Faint mint/herbal very late. Adding water, it's much the same, though the oily/nutty/varnishy elements fade a bit. I like this whisky a lot - I've been through four bottles of it! Despite the rush of alcohol on the palate and the young age, this doesn't taste very young. It's well put together, and the madeira cask finish is well-incorporated.
