This is the third release of Balblair 1989, a great malt which was matured in ex-bourbon barrels.
As with the 2001 vintage, launched in November 2011, this expression is non-chill-filtered, and bottled at 46% abv.
Vanilla and spicy oak abound with some intriguing spice and citrus notes.
Soft and sweet, yet full and voluptuous towards the middle. There are cereal notes here and more vanilla oak.
Good length, with a creamy quality beneath the sweet, bourbon oak.
A lovely smooth dram that remains interesting and rich despite its sweetness.
I went on a hunt for this one must say it was well worth all the trouble. What an excellent whisky, and worth every penny. This is all about the malt taking on the vanilla. And turning into a highland ice cream. A truly wonderful whisky.
Very interesting and supremely tasty Scotch - a rare and beautiful find, and very reasonably priced (I paid around £100). There's a light fruit, hint of smoke on the finish, and a sort of shortbread biscuit taste - very pleasant indeed. Worth looking for and definitely recommended
For me, this was an exertion into expensive malt (for my purse anyway!). Absolutely love it - the MoM tasting notes are quite accurate although I found honeyed tones in the palate. I will be buying another when I can afford it. One word of warning, only add spring water (if water is your thing) or ice cubes made from such water. I added a tapwater ice cube and this whisky really brought out the chlorine.
As always in my opinion!
