Yamazaki 12 Year Old

Yamazaki is Suntory's flagship single malt whisky, from Japan's first and oldest malt distillery. This 12 year old first came onto the market in 1984 and was the first seriously marketed Japanese single malt whisky. Since then, it has acquired something of a cult following, and for good reason! A wonderfully elegant and smooth single malt that’s certainly not lacking in flavour.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Good body with plenty of nut oils and zest, a pleasant floral character with a little tropical fruit and a rooty note.

Palate Smooth and soft with good sweetness and winter spice. A lovely citrus note develops with more tropical fruit notes and a little rum.

Finish Medium with fruit and zest.

100 drams you should taste before and after you die
The fruity notes and aroma on this one are amazing. Sure the japanese whisky is superhyped but they own expressions like this one that are no easily forgetable. Yamazaki is pure quality

Fantastic, but ridiculously steep price drags the score down
Tried it once in a bar, wouldn't buy a bottle unless I find myself in Japan. Great, fruity and well-rounded whisky, don't get me wrong. However, for a comparison, I am looking at my cart on the Australia's largest liquor merchant's website, and for the exact same price of Yamazaki 12, I have added: Bunna 12, Clynelish 14 and Redbreast 12. Also, Suntory will raise prices further in April 2024. Hibiki Harmony and Hakushu range are also out of control. Sorry, it is just a fad at this point.

Supermarket whisky
This has to be the most overrated whisky I have ever tried.

It is completely inoffensive and delicate. But there just isn't much flavour here at all.

You'd be better off buying any single malt from the local supermarket.

Wish I could get some
Had this at a restaurant in Kyoto last year. The whole experience was amazing and this topped it off. Seemed like the nicest whisky I'd ever had. Too bad basically impossible to get but maybe best to remember it like that.

Good but bad price performance.
Tuath glass showing deep gold. The nose shows light, clean notes of apple. The palate is very smooth and mildly sweet with flavors of apple and light smoke on the end. Good but poor price performance.

Pretty good, but not £125 good
Yamazaki 12 is a pretty decent dram, with an incredible smoothness but little else. I'd definitely recommend it if it was around the £40-50 mark, but anything more than £70 feels bad.

There's nothing particularly distinct about this whisky, and it is so delicate that that if you drink any whiskies beforehand you won't be able to get any flavour out of this.

I'd recommend trying this at a bar, but if you have £120 burning a hole in your pocket, go buy two bottles of Redbreast 12/15 instead - you'll be far less disappointed.

Amazing and expensive but for good reasons
Amazing dram. People on here marking it down for the price clearly havent followed the demand for this whisky over the past 4 years. Its expensive because its basically discontinued until further notice

Don't try this at home
Yes, it is a very decent single malt which has something unique to it (I got some pine on the palate, otherwise tasting notes here are in the right ballpark besides rum to my taste). BUT is it worth the price of admission at three digits? NOPE.
