In 2014, the Tomatin 12 Year Old was given an update and bottled at 43% ABV rather 40%, as it was previously. This core single malt from the ace distillery in the Highlands is finished for six-to-nine months in Oloroso Sherry casks before being bottled.
Buttery at first, but notes of cooked apple, raisin and almond soon emerge. There are resinous and floral hints as well as some chocolate.
Oak-y vanilla and fresh mint, dotted with stem ginger, a touch of guava and dried orange peel.
Currant buns, a hint of raspberry jam, barley.
I am bemused by some of the negative reviews below. This is a very nice, well balanced, Highland Whisky, well worth the price. I wonder whether there are some counterfeit bottles out there.
I bought this bottle for his price point of D 1,750 ( = 27,- euro, 23,- pounds ) and I absolutely do not like it. Altough I read many positive reviews on this site, I do not find it in my tasting. Double matured in bourbon casks and for the last 9 months in Oloroso Sherry. Where is the sherry? On the nose I find red apple ( pink lady ) and some raisins but mostly a lot of alcohol. The palate is small better but still the alcohol is overpwering and this with only 43%. My conclusion is simple = this whisky is not balanced at all. Another lesson learned in whisky land, be aware of the very cheap offerings. Luckely there is still my Famous Grouse, which is even cheaper but so much better !
It seems stronger than 43%. Robust drop. Not much subtlety, but enough to ponder. Nose is digestives, lemon, seaweed, plastic caramel. Tongue is hot booze, pepper, subtle croissant sustaining. A bit of toffee and then Juicy Fruit at the very end, the length is okay. A decent mid-agro knockabout, but it’s not joining the stable and I’m not sure when the bottle will be finished. Many better offerings at this price point.
Smooth enough but a bit too buttery for me
I'm a fifty year whiskey drinker. This is just ok. It tastes hot, it needs a lot of water to make it palatable, then it's to much. I feel like I wasted my money on this. I'm halfway through the bottle, it has been open 6 weeks. I'll be glad when I finish it.
