The jewel in the crown of The Macallan's 1824 Series is erm, a Ruby! With the darkest hue in a no age statement range where colour is king, Ruby has spent the longest time in only the very finest sherry casks. The colour has been taken on naturally with no artificial colouring.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Rich wedding cake and espresso, cocoa, a little clove and walnut.
Raspberry coulis, maraschino, prunes, marmalade.
Long and rich, dark berries and ginger.
Big, bold, fruity sherried Speyside.
I am a Macallan fan. The 18 yr sherry oak & 25 yr sherry oak are my favourites. Not to forget the epic 10yr cask strength and the 12 year Gran reserva. Having tasted such Macallans, reading the reviews of the 1824 series has been quite disappointing. I dint bother to try until recently when the duty free had a 20% discount on pre-order. The Ruby is certainly not as great as the Macallan 18. But its still is an outstanding whisky. The first fill sherry casks stand out. Quite exceptional. A sweetness appears when it touches the palate but soon disappears. There should be some young whiskies to make it 'intense'. On the nose, it is a sherry bomb. Cinnamon, mild orange flavour & dry fruits. The finish is long but lacks the 'signature Macallan' finish. Adding a drop or two of water doesn't make it any better. Good one but not as great as the other Macallans but I paid 35% less than the Macallan 18 sherry oak & therefore I find it good.
If you want easy drinking then this is not for you. If you want spice, smokey, and bite then go for it.
A wonderful smooth flowing drink I always enjoy it to the fullest never I doubt ordering it.
Had this beauty for the first time last night.... worth every cent of the $19 I paid for a nip..... twice :-)
With the hefty price tag to just have a dram. One of the most wonderful flavours I have ever experienced!
