Macallan 1950 (bottled 2006) - Speymalt (Gordon & MacPhail)

Macallan 1950-2006 Bottling Note

A rare, 44 year old single malt from the Macallan distillery, distilled in 1950 and bottled in 1994 under Gordon and MacPhail's Speymalt range.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

The nose is full and rich. There are notes of cinnamon and manuka honey, freshly brewed coffee and calvados. A touch of sherry with a cut fennel note and a pear character. The palate is full-bodied and rich. There are notes of rum and buttery fruitcake, hints of spice and an earthen note with a soft peat and a very wistful smoke. The finish is long with the oak developing with a touch of cereal sweetness.

User Reviews of the Macallan 1950 (bottled 2006) - Speymalt (Gordon & MacPhail)

The very best value Rolls Royce of whiskies.

I bought a bottle of this 56 year old Sherry cask Macallan a couple of years ago.
Lets be clear, do not confuse Independent bottling with unofficial bottling. Gordon & MacPhail have been official bottlers for Macallan for over 100 years. So the provenance of the liquid is without question, perfect.
Macallan have in recent years moved away from sherry casks due to shortages of them and commercial demand for the brand. But make no mistake, this 56 year old is sherried through and through.
Xmas cake with rum poured into it, sultanas, cloves, rich berries, demerera sugar with lime peel. Layers of rich flavour and a smooth long long finish.
Yes appx £3k is a lot of money. But 56 years is a long long time. Its a lifetime. I'd sooner buy a bottle of this and have a measure quarterly than watch my car depreciate at a faster rate than the value of the bottle each year. As an investment too one can not beat it. Distilleries are now pushing out unaged mediocre whiskies with names like Whirlwind. This is the opposite. All Speymalts have the same design. Only the age statement differentiates them. This is the single best value Rolls Royce whisky in the world. Go on, do it. You know you want to.
