The Half-Century Blend Bottling Note

Launched in the latter half of 2016, The Half-Century Blend is The Blended Whisky Company's bottle-shaped love letter to the days of whisky production where "less efficient barley-strains, sprawling on-site floor maltings, inefficient brewer’s yeast, lengthy fermentation times, mucky direct-fired stills, bulky and inefficient worm-tub condensers and less active refill casks" were the norm. As the name suggests, this astounding expression was made with whiskies which were aged for over 50 years, resulting in an immensely expressive flavour profile showing off the unmistakable characteristics of incredible whisky distilled over half a century ago. Only 768 bottles were produced in the first batch.

Serge from WhiskyFun gave The Half-Century Blend a score of 90 Points.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Freshly baked apple crumble topped with brown sugar and extra-thick double cream, followed by roast chestnuts and a whiff of brandied cherries. A touch of tobacco leaf and old oak furniture.

Palate: More cigar box and brown sugar on the palate, joined by bourbon-y vanilla and generous handfuls of dried fruit (with some juicy cherries sneaking in once again). Perhaps a touch of rye spice develops with the ethereal oak notes growing behind the rich fruit.

Finish: Juicy apricot jam, gingerbread, walnut and the last hints of elegant oak lingering for ages.

Overall: Massively, massively impressive blended Scotch whisky with seemingly endless poise and depth.

24. The Half Century Blend - Batch 2 - A bit of rancio like last year which expresses itself as blue cheese, along with some Christmas spice and caramel. The rancio disappears after a couple of minutes and leaves the caramel sweetness. Very creamy on the tongue, with the sweetness predominant, leading to cinnamon rolls and pepper, with a wonderful long Christmas spice and vanilla finish. Top notch.

Nevada Camel

Truly remarkable. I'm not a fan of blended whiskies in general, as I think most sacrifice character for flavor. That is NOT the case with this blend. The aging process has instilled character in abundance, flavor in layers of immense depth, and a smooth fruity, earthy, woody finish. Delightful.

Fruity

Incredibly fresh for something that's so old. I can taste layers and layers of fruit - and not just the 'normal' stewed fruits and raisins - there's fresh stuff in here too. Apple, papaya, even a touch of the fabled pineapple.

Not Perfect

Amazing price for a 50yr. But holds true to the concept of too much age producing diminishing returns. Unbelievably smooth but loses some flavor. Complex, chewable, infinite finish. 88/100

Beautiful, fruity, mellow and warm.

This is absolutely delicious. Very easy to drink (I found it needs no water) with a lot of classy whisky notes and plenty of character left after such an extended maturation. A tumbler of this in a wingback chair by an open fire and you’d be left wanting for nothing.

Fruity fruity fruit

So much of it. Massively rich apricot madeleines, mixed stone-fruit compote and an elegant seam of blackberry running through it. Not in the least tired, this is truly a wonderful dram. Refreshing to see a (relatively) light colour at this age, too. Indicates a lack of reduction. Marvellous.
