Talisker 2000 (bottled 2011) Amoroso Cask Finish - Distillers Edition Reviews

Good whiskey...

... I've been experimenting a bit and moving away from my go-to Islay whiskies recently. Always been a fan of Talisker though, especially 57 North, but had never tried this one. At first I thought it was another 'wish I'd just bought what I know' which I've had a lot of recently. Laphroaig Triple Wood was a classic example, and Bunnahabain 18, though 2/3rds of the way into that bottle it got considerably better.

By the time I'd let my first glass of this rest for 20 minutes though, I was starting to appreciate some really lovely qualities to this whisky. Not perfect, but I certainly wouldn't try and dissuade anyone from buying it.

Still nice....

Just another step away from the greatness of the 1998 and 1999 but still the most smooth, easy drinking, flavoursome whisky. Still my favourite.

Better than the 10 year

I've been working my way through the islands as part of my beginning to appreciate whisky a little better, and so far the Distiller's Edition stands out as the best balanced. What I find so appealing about this is the immediacy of the nutmeg, soft caramel and orange that come through in the first taste, but what really stands out is the restraint on the pepper that floods other Taliskers. Sometimes it's just too much. Also, although I love a whisky to be smoky (I'm a big fan of the 57N, for example), the smoke here is much calmer and is helpful to the warm flavours rather than overpowering. It's very smooth and provides a much more soothing aftertaste than either the 10yr or the 57. Definitely one for the winter months in a comfy leather chair.

Talisker with the edges sanded off

... actually that's not quite fair. It's a lot smoother and mellower than the standard 10yr old with added fruit (raisins, sultanas, xmas pudding .. something on those lines .. ); but the real deal smoky peppery talisker is still all there. Very nice.

Wonder if sherry casking is to make difficult peaty smoky whisky more sellable to people who don't really like hebridean malt. I'm not a huge fan of the process.

I'd give it a 5 star, but that's reserved for some Ardbegs!

Tried and true!

Fantastic finish and smooth.

I've been a big fan of Talisker's 10yr and this has certain similar elements but much more going on as well. It's got a bit less smoke to it but a great deal more taking its place. Great price, too. Couldn't wait to try it after bringing it home and will have to find another because this one won't last long!

Must have for Talisker lover

a must have for Talisker fan. Fresh and spicy, with great sweet and smoky aftertaste. Orange peels, apricot/orange jam, coal fire and hint of herbs. Much different than Talisker 10YO, but nice as much. Povilas
