Starward Nova Bottling Note

An ace Australian single malt from the Starward range, Nova spends its life maturing in casks that previously held Australian red wine, sources from wineries that produce some lovely Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Cabernet. In fact, the casks come right from the wineries, and are only lightly charred or steamed before whisky goes into them, ensuring that the wine's flavour profile has an impact on the spirit. Particularly decadent stuff, it does very well when pairing with rich foods as well as being enjoyed by itself. it's also rather good in cocktails that take advantage of the bold red fruit notes. Perhaps even a Manhattan...?

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Positively bursting with red fruit, strawberries with a Port-like mixture of fruit and nuts.

Palate: Honey, cinnamon and more red fruit on the palate, creamy nutty texture, luxurious mouthfeel with a touch of tannin.

Finish: Toffee with walnuts.

Starward Nova Reviews

Not complex but sippable like your run of the mill Marker's Mark

Frankly, a let down based on price and the hype on red wine barrel aging. I expected to taste more character in the body, but not much found. It's good for cocktails or sipping smooth but don't expect to find anything complex. Fingers crossed it gets better with age... but I'm not holding my breath.

Good Australian

Typical Australian whisky in that it matures more quickly than colder climate whiskies such as Scottish malts.
This can lead to inferior flavours. However Starward Nova seems to have got the maturation right. A very nice whisky. Price? Considering it comes from the other side of the planet, I think the price is not bad.

light, lacks complexity

Interesting to try an Australian whisky. Very light on the palette and lacks somehat the complexity that I look for in a single malt.

Very good, maybe overpriced

Had this in my advent calendar last night. I can echo what the people below have said, it is not a particularly complex malt but it is very tasty and would be a great go to easy drinker. The price looks a tad high for what it is but I did enjoy it a lot.

Bourbon, Whisky, Spiced Rum? Love Starward’s Work

My drink of choice would usually be Bourbon or Spiced Rum. But since discovering Starward’s whiskeys I haven’t looked back. They are a fresh take on this comfortable world, have sweet and real fruity flavours and are so easy to drink. This Nova release is no exception. Love the flavours from the red wine barrels. A real quality product.

Its a whisky, no it's a port, no it's a whisky

Very tasty and unique whisky from Australia. It's actually only aged 2 years but they say due to climate it doesn't need as long in the barrel as a Scotch or Bourbon. Well it's really good as a red wine fan and a whisky drinker I was excited for this. The taste is somewhere in between port and a highland Scotch. Sweet and spicy. Cinnamon and cloves, a big hit of port, and then a medium finish where the spices come back. Add a half star if you like red wine. Nice for something different.
