Mars Maltage Cosmo is a blended malt featuring whisky from the little-known Japanese distillery Shinshu, as well as whiskies from undisclosed Scottish distilleries. An intriguing expression...
Soft vanilla notes up front, joined by sweet red fruit (think cherry and sugary raspberry).
Orange oil and chocolate, fresh barley and toasty oak.
Fresh plum and white grape. Cereals and chocolate biscuits.
Deep yellow in colour, prominant nose of cherries, marzipan maybe toffee apple. Thick, oily on the palette in a pleasant way. Spicy and takes a few drops of water without firing up or destroying the flavour. However there isn't much complexity or refinement in flavour mostly woody, caramel and vanilla, and for me isn't a great example of Japanese whisky like a 12yo hibiki or yamazaki. I received this as part of the Japanese advent calendar so probably taking a differing view than if I'd paid near £60 at which I would be upset. Much better whisky's can be had for this price for my pallette but glad to have tried it.
Disappointing for a whisky of this price. I don't understand the positive reviews. I find this to be very harsh with a sharp edge and high alcohol, with very little depth of flavour. It has neither a sweet, nor a smoky, nor a fruity character. Really disappointing.
Nothing bad to say about this whisky but you're basically paying for a scotch whisky that has been flown to Japan and back again. If you like this, I'd suggest trying a Balvenie.
I could rave about it. I've been to Japan six times. On returning from Haneda airport. Nov 2019 the duty free recommended MARS Maltage Cosmo.
I had high hopes for this, it being in the book '101 whiskys to try before you die.' Admitedly, the chap writing the book openly said he hadn't tried it, and was putting it in purely on the strength of what he'd read/heard about it, but despite this I thought I would take the plunge. Tasted boring, forgettable, faintly desperate and with a tinge of something that might once have been character but had been buried by a myriad of bland layers. Best described as like a Weds night at Flares with your Uncle. Avoid, or be mildly regretful and slightly sadder for the experience.
