Big Peat's gone and got himself a trusty sidekick in the shape of a dapper Fox Terrier wearing a monocle! Scallywag from Douglas Laing is a vatted malt made from Speyside whiskies, including Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes. Many of the whiskies used in the small batch release come from Spanish sherry butts, giving Scallywag a fab sweetness that's balanced by some "mischievous" bourbon cask whisky also in the blend.
Sweetness jumps up like an excited puppy. Icing sugar, sultanas and candied ginger. A few hints of grain here and there, but sweetness steals the show.
The sweetness surprisingly retreats, revealing nutmeg and cereal. Vanilla comes in near the end. Cinnamon too, giving it a prickle of spice.
A pinch of oak spice joins the vanilla and sherry for the finish.
Incredibly pleasant, the Scallywag is an absolute treat in every sense.
I have never liked a scotch before. I just buy it for friends and guests. But, the lovely smell of Scallywag urged me to try it. Unlike whisky I don't drink neat spirits. I paired this with Barrel Smoked Cola from Artisan drinks. What I tasted was the most luxurious version of any bourbon and cola I have ever enjoyed. Scallywag does not have any peaty smokiness. It is full of well balanced sweeter notes that taste closer to an expensive bourbon to me. I'm about to buy another bottle - not just for guests.
Lovely blended malt. Initial scent of vanilla gives way to a richer, warming flavour that deepens as it lingers. An easy to drink malt, very moreish. warm and comforting
Super value for money… a real quality malt and at a refreshingly good price
Smooth and interesting. My son loves Speyside and I too agree this is very good nice sweetish and caramel type flavours and very moorish. Excellent at this price point.
Really nice and easy dram, dam good buy too!!!! Really sets your taste buds alive
