Redemption Rye Whiskey Bottling Note

A straight rye whiskey made with a mashbill of 95% rye for intensity and spiciness. Aged for over 2 years and bottled at 46%, this is bold stuff! Absolutely perfect on its own or in a cocktail.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Very big and spicy (what did we expect?!), toasted oak, vegetal notes, allspice and anise.

Palate: More dark spices, star anise, treacle and a hint of espresso.

Finish: Did we mention it was spicy?

Overall: Big, spicy and fairly fresh, eminently drinkable.

Redemption Rye Whiskey Reviews

Harsh

Bought this when they were out of Rittenhouse. Pretty bad. Not a smooth edge anywhere to be found. Hits you immediately with a harsh vegetal taste. A few notes of vanilla and leather in there but they're lost in that immediate punch in the nuts. Had a small amount of Rittenhouse left so did a side by side. Rittenhouse won hands down and they were basically the same price. I won't pour it out but I won't be serving it to guests either.

Good Rye. Worth the price

I think it pretty good but I didnt taste any leather, neat, like Rob Morton did in his review for another blog. How the hell do you know what leather tastes like?

Yes on the old fashioned

Makes a great old fashioned..... I love Overholt's price but for about another 5 bucks.... Redemption makes a spicy , smokey, caramelized cocktail.....try it

Works well in an Old-fashioned

I am pretty new to rye but I find it great in an old-fashioned cocktail. This one is spicy and smooth enough to work great in the cocktail. It's a little more expensive than I would like to pay, so I may look for something else next time, but not because there is anything wrong with the whiskey. I haven't gotten any headaches from it.

an hour later

I'm definitely getting popsicle and watermelon in the nose, but basically the same palate as an hour ago. expected rye buzz, no headache.

7th December 2018

ok leave it out for a bit

let it sit for 25 minutes and it was waay better on the palate. pine is nice but kind of one-dimensional. nose I got medicine, leather, antiperspirant. I could smell the heads and tails in my bathroom after leaving it there, so it's not from the middle. maybe that's the headache, adjusted my rating to make up for my 2 rating.

7th December 2018

terrible

headache with this every time. should've sprang a few more bucks for a knob creek 100 or rittenhouse or something else upper-mid-shelf, russells. I don't like these MGP products will try to avoid, even high west I would not get again. I'll probably finish the bottle though, not liking it.

Recommend!!

Smooth and spicy!! Better than wild turkey and I’m a wild turkey fan!!

9th February 2018

Will but it for the 7th time!

If your a bourbon drinker you may not enjoy this as much.
If you are a rye drinker, I would say it is worth a try!!
I find that most ryes are to bourbony..?
This is spicy in a smooth kind of way.
I get ginger with cedar right of the bat, finishing with a little sweetness then mellowing out.
The nose is grandma’s closet....with a touch of a Ethan Allen dresser..
I drink Redemption most of the times neat in a dram but it makes a really nice cocktail because of it spice as well.
Like it and will buy it again!
Love the fact that they have changed the bottle as well, it makes it easier to fit it in my liquor cabinet!

Redemption and old overholt rule the world!

I like it just fine especially for the authentic blast of rye and gentle swing of whiskey magic.

29th December 2017

Very spicy, minty and dry. Better with ice. Good for a head cold!

I rarely go toward a straight rye whiskey, but thought I’d give it a try, since I just dropped $4100 on a new transmission... another story there. Anyway, I needed Redemption and this provided it for $27. Not good neat, but quite tasty with a few ice cubes. Look forward to a nice Manhattan with this base.

Not awful mixed.

I tried it. I thought it tasted just like someone tried to make whiskey from lawn clippings. I'll stick with "Dad's Hat", a rye that I absolutely love.

6th October 2017

This is one spicy MF!!

I like this!
Redemption Rye is certainly a rye! It is spicy at first but finishes quiet nicely. It is great for mixing or with an ice cube. For the price, it is easy to have on tucked away in my collection!

19th March 2017

Not great

Ok, not great. It has a weird taste, fake, chemical. It's one dimensional, artificial. It's overly sweet and then overly peppery. It's like a computer designed what a rye whiskey should taste like. I'm not choking it down but would never seek this out again.

26th February 2017

If you truly like rye, you will like this

I dont know how you can give this a 2 star or even a 3....first, this bottle is $25 at my liquor store and open it up with a little ice or mix an old fashioned or manhatten...stellar...very good spice, takes on a smooth character over ice as well...MAYBE i like rittenhouse a bit better in a cocktail, but they are right at the same price points....love this whiskey.

25th February 2017

Harsh and Uninteresting

I have had a lot of rye whiskies, and I have to say that none that I regretted spending money as much as this one. Not much character, a little harsh. Really way too young. If it was 15 bucks, I would not complain but at this price point? Rittenhouse is a much better buy than this one. High West Double Rye blows the socks out of this one as well.

7th October 2016

Excellent Rye

a bold and spicy rye that stays true to the last sip.

25th July 2015

A huge dry rye & spicy hit

Very distinctive intro of freshly baked rye bread, juniper , liquorice, dark herbal honey, toasted mint & aromatic spices. A dark & thick mouthfulll of toasty rye, anise, espresso coffee, roasted sweet squash in herbal honey, menthol & peppery spice.A dry & peppery long finish with vanilla toast & more aromatic coffee, anise & menthol.Something dark & brooding here too! The Whisky Flaneur

19th May 2015

a good rye

This is a very tasty rye whisky , nice spice and complex flavors. I like to drink on rocks with a single ice cube. It's remarkably smooth when drunk this way.

11th February 2015

Overrated

A very good bottle of sauce, to be sure, but not worth the price. Comes from the same Lawrenceville, Indiana distillery as Bulleit Rye, which is a much more interesting drink at 2/3rds the price.
