Port Askaig 8 Year Old Bottling Note

An 8 year old single malt Scotch whisky from the Isle of Islay, bottled for Speciality Drinks' Port Askaig range. Enjoyably smokey and elegant - a neat introduction to the range.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Charcoal, salted crisps and a good squeeze of lemon.

Palate: Soft salted caramel brings a sweetness to the palate, with waves of coastal peat smoke crashing underneath.

Finish: Medium length, with a hot kick of peppercorn.

Port Askaig 8 Year Old Reviews

Nose is smoke and brine forward, green apple peel, high salinity and seaweed. Taste is again that high coastal sea salt, peat comes firing in, and a finish of hot pepper and barrel bitterness. Really good as a intro to Islay

Not bad

This is actually a pretty good whisky not a lot of depth but very smooth with a nice amount of peat smoke, some sweet brown sugar, and some sea salt. Considering how close in price it is to the 100 proof I would just get that every time over this more bang for your buck for sure. Still not a bad whisky. The Sugarbear

Solid Islay Malt

A bit bland, while not quite rounded out (yet?), but overall a solid and peaty Islay Whiskey.

The flavours are close to Port Askaig 100 proof but not as good, the price is not that much of a different so I would go for the 100 proof.

Good buy

I loved it, good honest young islay, ash, sea shells, bandages and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Not for me

Not a good one
I’d put a few more coins and get me a proper ISLAY malt

The prominent lemon note in particular would suggest it’s a second-rate Caol Ila. Then the question becomes: when the 12 year old of that is £5 more, why buy this?

Not that rough for its age, not so special for flavour. You might say it’s middle of the road for Islay. Fairly well arranged and not without complexity, so it could be quite commendable for a keener price; but at this PQR it doesn’t really stand out above the cheaper age statements.

Love it. Will buy more

I love it. Like a kaleidoscope going off in my mouth. I like peaty and this has lots of other flavors. Was recommended at a Whisky store in Edinburgh by a young lady and I thank her very much.

Very nice, will buy again

I like my peat smoke thick and tarry, this one has it.

Update: After several more tastings I poured it down the sink. What a waste of money.

Smoke and boring

So I bought this due to the contest here on MOM, and even though I never had this brand of whisky I thought let's just buy it and try it. It has a medium smoke taste and that's about it... It's by far the most bland and boring whisky I ever had.
