The Diageo Special Releases 2018 features a few surprises and treats, one of which is this single malt Scotch from Pittyvaich Distillery. Why is it so surprising? Well, the distillery was closed in 1993 and the public has rarely seen any of its casks get a chance in the limelight since.
Fortunately, Diageo has provided us with the chance to sample the almost-forgotten delights of Pittyvaich through this 1989-vintage edition. It was matured in refill American-oak hogsheads and bottled at a cask strength 52.1%.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Super malty, with fresh barley jumping straight from the glass. Baked apple notes, Custard Cream biscuits, subtle pepper, magnolia flowers, chewy red fruits. Ginger cake and green banana, too.
Really lively with zesty orange juice and hot cinnamon springing out first. Then there's cooked apple, almond, coconut and menthol whispers.
Quite gentle. It's all about apple strudels, with a distant wisp of smoke.
A lively single malt – if you like vibrant ex-bourbon whiskies, this is for you.
Intriguing, subtle and elegant. This is a real thinker that has enough complexity to make the drinker keep coming back for more. In a trend climate dominated by hyper-peaty or mega-sherried whiskies this is a welcome return to the lighter nuances of speyside. Also a great insight into the style of single malt that is suited to blending.
