Old Overholt Straight Rye Bottling Note

Old Overholt is an appropriately old brand of rye whiskey and one half of "The Olds", alongside Bad Santa's favourite, Old Grand-Dad. It's a classic straight rye produced by Jim Beam.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Not as 'in your face' as rye can be, but the mild spice is there, alongside some sweetness and fruitiness, especially apples.

Palate: Vanilla, then that rye spice, summer fruits with some darker spices developing.

Finish: More prominent rye on the finish.

Overall: A cocktail-making American classic.

Old Overholt Straight Rye Reviews

Cheap, Good Mixer, Cheap, You Can Even Sip. Cheap.

Cheap. Good for mixing. Cheap. You can even get away with sipping from time to time. Did I mention cheap?

Not nasty, but just "meh". Probably it used to be better...

Overholt has a reputation, so I can only assumed that it's just not as good as it used to be. My modern one... is just bland, too weak and underwhelming. I am comparing it to Rittenhouse bonded (50% abv) and Dickel Rye (45%), which are lovely. I think even a bottom shelf straight bourbon tastes better than this. It's not disgusting and is sippable, but I am keeping it mostly as a data point - to compare and contrast to tasty ryes. Otherwise I'd demote it to cooking duty. Won't buy again.
