Oban 2000-2015 DE Bottling Note

Ooh... Oban! A favourite malt of many, and their Distillers Edition bottlings are well loved too. This is a 2000 vintage Oban, which was bottled in 2015 after enjoying a finishing period in casks which had previously held tasty Montilla Fino.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Characteristic Oban notes of sea-swept beaches, complimented by the drying though sweet Sherry notes.

Palate: Warm grapes, stewed fruit and more sea breeze.

Finish: Rich and slightly spiced on the finish.

Oban 2000 (bottled 2015) Montilla Fino Cask Finish - Distillers Edition Reviews

If you don't like ask for your money back. It won't have been the real thing

This is a wonderfully rounded malt. The fino cask superbly compliments the flavour of the whisky giving a long lasting warm, slightly salty taste. One to savour. Excellent with dark chocolate

Try it with cheese

I've tried the Oban 14 on several occasions and never been convinced. Always a little too sharp and lacking some complexity. However, I wanted a West Highland malt in my collection so I decided to try this. For a little context, I should point out that I love variety, have no single favourite whisky though I often lean on Glenlivet 12 as daily dram. I like some smoke but prefer Bunahabhain to Laphroaig. I like unchillfiltered for the mouth feel. I tasted this immediately after a glass of Eagle Rare (water in between of course).

My first nose was a real heads-up. There is such a strong mineral (brine) odour, I immediately had a Proustian flashback to childhood holidays in Cornwall watching my grandmother picking cockles off the rocks and eating them with her hatpin. Then the sherry and orange zest hit me and I was cooking Christmas dinner again.

In the mouth, wow, wow again, hold it on your tongue. No burn, just delicious slow developments of citrus, sherry, malt, honey. Then the tide comes back in and washes the finish all the way down. This may have the longest and most pleasant finish of any whisky I've tasted as the maltiness comes gently back to sooth like my Mum giving me my cod-liver oil.

I had to have a second glass to make sure I wasn't just falling into some senescent reverie. It was even better. On impulse, I cut a chunk of the Moliterno con Tartufo that was festering in the kitchen. My head nearly fell off with delight. Why don't people talk more about whisky/cheese pairings? The earthiness of the truffle hit the sea salt in the Oban and POW! Heaven. Thank you Oban.
