Ragtime Rye Whiskey 57.9% Bottling Note

A higher-strength single barrel Ragtime Rye bottling, specially bottled for the British Bourbon Society! Made at the New York Distilling Company’s Brooklyn site, this expression takes the elegant berry, menthol and cinnamon notes you’d expect from the regular-strength Ragtime Rye but with an added extra delicious kick. It’s the same 72% New York State-grown rye, 16% corn, 12% malted barley mash bill, but the higher bottling strength makes this quite the mega-mouth-watering whiskey. Prepare the Sazeracs, ready the Manhattans!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Surprisingly crisp for a higher-strength whiskey, it’s all about the vibrant red fruits, hot vanilla, nutmeg and fresh menthol. Lively stuff!

Palate: It’s thick and warming, classic spicy high-rye whiskey with a pleasing slap of jammy berries, zesty orange and papaya. It’s not all about the fruit though; there’s loads of grain character here, and the corn influence still smooths things out, balancing the pepper heat.

Finish: The berries continue through, and there’s a confectionery sweetness in with some mint leaf.

Overall: It's undoubtedly high rye at a high strength but it remains elegant – fun to sip but it would also make an epic booze-forward cocktail with all that flavour.

Wouldn't have been brave enough to choose this without encouragement, glad I did!

As others have said, this makes a brilliant Old Fashioned.

It is quite fiery on its own and produces a distinct rye heat that may not be for everyone.

Picked up as a gift to myself and a friend after I 'helped' him finish his off in, as I said, a wicked Old Fashioned.

Thought I missed out!

Finally got a bottle after being under the impression it had sold out.

As mentioned by others this is a young rye and has a 'hot' palate, maybe too sharp for some, but it's definitely for me.

Gets better?

I've had a bottle open for a few months now and, I don't know if it's me or the bottle, it's so much more enjoyable than I initially thought!

Either way very happy and snapped up one more

Damn fine rye

This is a young rye, but as someone who is not keen on young rye and the tendency to get harsh paint stripper and acetone notes in many young ryes, this is beautiful stuff. A nose with lots of the grain character and a palate that whilst hot, has a lovely rounded feel to it. Very polished and bold and one of the best ryes I've had, and probably the best young rye I've had.

Worth a punt.

A little young, but handles the high proof very well and I find it quite an enjoyable sipper. A couple more years in the cask would give this what it's missing but to be honest. I think this will be a bottle that grows on me quite a bit and then I'll end up missing it. Whiskey is fun.

Just wasn't ready to be bottled

Not a patch on other BBS releases over the last year... young, bitter and harsh. Such a shame - but the fanboys will say otherwise

Fantastic

Based on this single barrel pick and having had a sample of the BBS Few single barrel, I'll be keeping an eye out for these British Bourbon Society (BBS) picks.

Grabbed one more for myself and another or a friend whilst writing this. Lovely stuff.

A really good spicy rye with plenty of character!

BBS is doing some great things with their single barrel picks, yep this is quite a young whiskey but it's really worth a go, a great sipper and lovely in cocktails.

A great great young craft rye that reminds me of the old fashioned pick and mix sweet tray on the nose.

Another cracking single barrel from BBS

Nose - You can tell it’s young, but there’s a solid rye spice alcohol aroma. Once this calms you get some sweetness that has a likeness of burnt sweet popcorn

Palate - What I do like is the big booze hit! The flavours are fighting to come through but they just can’t quite win. But what you do get it sweet rye heat

Finish - Spicy, hot, some burnt sugar and also a pleasant undertone of oranginess

Overall an enjoyable interesting pour which also makes a cracking Old Fashioned. Very excited about what these guys might produce down the line.
