Mortlach 12 Year Old Bottling Note

This is a 12 year old single malt produced at the Mortlach distillery in Speyside, unveiled in 2018 as part of a trio (including a 16 Year Old and a 20 Year Old). This particular expression features the subtitle The Wee Witchie, which comes from the name of the tiny still that distils a portion of the whisky. It's drawn from bourbon and sherry casks, and packs a hearty punch of meaty Mortlach-y malt at its core, supported by dried fruit and toffee notes.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Damson, toasted almond, cinder toffee and heavy barley.

Palate: Warming oak and soft raisins, with a bit of olive oil salinity mixed in.

Finish: A bit jammy, a bit nutty, some lingering citrus oils cutting through.

Mortlach 12 Year Old Reviews

50 years to discover this !

Why has it taken me over 50 years to discover the Wee Witchie ?

A great Malt for those who like a “meaty” Speyside.

My previous favourite Speyside was the 12 Year Old Macallan, but now at knocking 70 quid, the Wee Witchie has it beat !

Excellent Speyside with a lingering finish.

Probably my favourite ‘everyday’ Speyside - big hits of sherry and toffee that linger on the palate. The jammy fruits and hint of nuttiness add to the complexity. This one’s a reasonably priced orchestra for the tongue.

Absolutely gorgeous, without a doubt the best malt I have ever tasted

Subtle and refined

I absolutely love this, been through 3 bottles this year. I mainly drink Speyside and sherried cask whiskies, though individual standouts for me in 2020 were Glengoyne 15 and Glendronnach 12. The mortlach 12 it’s a subtle dram so avoid if you like them heavy and peated. However if you want something smooth and slightly sweet this is more complex than most, with a hint of smoke and long finish.

Nice but no cigar

I must say I was underwhelmed by this whisky, especially one that calls itself the ‘Beast’. It’s very enjoyable but for the price I think the extremely underrated Blair athol is far superior.

This gets mixed reviews but I find this very nice and smooth the price about heavy but would buy again

Disappointing bland

When the most remarkable thing about a whisky turns out to be the shape of the bottle you know you're in trouble. It's not that there's anything fundamentally wrong about this expression, it's just that it's distinctly underwhelming with not a lot happening in the mouth and very little in the way of finish. I was disappointed, especially given the number of positive reviews.

A great value for money

A great value for money whisky. One of the best 12 years.

Are we drinking the same thing?

Heard a lot about Mortlach so opted for a bottle...disappointing is an understatement. Nose is mild and without much by means of interest, palate is incredibly mundane and very cheap tasting, finish is decent but again one dimensional. I've tasted blended malts way cheaper that are way better, this stuff is poor and I could not recommend it to anyone. So much better out there at this price but, even if this was 10% of its current retail, I still wouldn't buy it again.
