Those Mackmyra folks really know how to push boundaries, and this may be one of the wildest things we've come across in a hot minute. Yep, this here is Mackmyra Intelligens, a single malt created using an artificial intelligence programme, hence why it's been dubbed AI:01.

The AI analysed Mackmyra's original 75 recipes and generated over 70 million recipes from that. One of them was this futuristic expression, a no age statement single malt weighing in at 46.1% ABV, but other than that it's rather mysterious. The bottle is packaged with an NFC tag, a piece of ‘intelligent packaging’ which smartphone users can scan in order to find out more information about the whisky. If there's yet another Blade Runner sequel, we'd put money on future Harrison Ford drinking this.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Tangy lemon curd, vanilla fudge, some sherried fruits and buttery toffee, with a hit of aromatic ginger spice, toasty oak and stewed orchard fruits.

Palate: A good helping of oak, citrus peel, vanilla pod and cigar box, with a whisper of smoke and slightly burnt toffee alongside freshly picked herbs.

Finish: Tangy apple skin and salted caramel on a drying oaky finish.

Nice whisky, but rough round the edges

Bought this as a gift as the concept of a whisky built by AI is a really interesting concept, and was lucky to try a dram myself! It's an interesting drink, and the sweet fruit and vanilla comes right to the front with what I thought was a bit of banana flavour.

There's a nice smoky background and a spiciness that develops as the sweetness wears off.

What stops me from rating this higher is the finish - it's quite rough, which may be a result of the young age but there are much smoother whiskies available in the price range.

Overall it's a good whisky and I'd definitely recommend any whisky lover tries it for the novelty, but can't see it becoming a regular purchase.

Spicy finish

The person claiming this lacks spice and only taste smoke has never had a smoky whisky.
The nose and palate reminds me a lot of Mackmyra Svensk ek - a hint of vanilla and some green grass are the tastes that stand out the most to me. However, the finish is the most spicy I have ever had in a whisky. The strong taste of black pepper lingers for a long while after you took the last sip. There is no peat at all, but the strong spice-cocktail might be confused with a peaty finish. To wrap things up I would not prioritize to buy this bottle again when it’s empty, but if I find it cheap or have some extra cash I might buy another one just for the special taste and story behind it.

More maturity needed.

Not sure who wrote the notes for that but the whisper of smoke is an understatement to say the least. It is dry and ashy, for days. The smoke is not particularly overwhelming but on the finish the smoke lingers on and on. The spice is non existent, it's spiky, not spicy. There is no sweetness to this, there is a bitterness that refuse to let go. I would go with a youthful taste, it needs maturing.

Vanilla. Custard. Spice.

This is one of those whiskys that you just sit and nose for minutes on end...have a little taste...and then carry on nosing. Beautiful creamy vanilla custard and spice, a smidge of citrus. Love it.
