Macallan 12yo Triple Cask

Macallan's Triple Cask range was launched in 2018, taking the place of the Fine Oak range. This is the entry level expression from the series, matured for 12 years and drawn from a combination of European sherry seasoned casks, American sherry seasoned casks and American ex-bourbon casks.

This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Gingerbread, vanilla essence, wafts of buttered toast and clotted-cream-topped scones.

Palate Raisins, sultanas and stem ginger. Citrus begins to develop on the palate, with a touch of dark chocolate.

Finish Subtle cedar and honey linger on the palate.

Reviews for The Macallan 12 Year Old Triple Cask
Light, with an enjoyably long aftertaste
I admit first to a bias for big, peaty Islays. With that caveat on my point of view, I found this malt to very much to my liking despite the light flavor, Light early caramel (others said buttery peach - sort of the same) with a lovely long aftertaste fading to almonds. Why not a five? I would have liked more mid tongue punch, a bit bolder flavor overall. But worth the price.

Non-offensive
There's nothing too aggressive nor too subtle about this dram. I found this to be a great embodiment of Speyside. If you're new to whisky or or just want to get something easy to drink then this is a very good option.

Pleasant MacAllan experience
It’s what you would expect from a younger macallan, clotted cream and raisin overtones with a vanilla and peach finish. Doesn’t set the world alight like the more mature macallans, but still a very pleasant drinking experience.

Disappointed!
Not what it used to be and disappointing! I got it in Nigeria for about $36 and thought I got a steal. I miss the Sherry sweetness. This lacks flavor. Yes, it's somewhat easy to drink, but not the same as double cask sherry only.

Change for worse
I just came back from a tasting session and the star of the show was Macallan 12 Tripple Cask. I was immediattely surprised from the light caracter of this whisky. Nothing left from the recognizable rich and rounded sherry bomb it once was. The signature dried fruits are now replaced by orchard fruits flavors, i guess caused by a high percentage of this whisky being aged in ex bourbon cask these days. Overall, a very dissapounting experience, also the price is double from what used tobe some 5-6 years ago.

‘Nice’, horrible word but suits perfectly. Damned with very faint praise.
If it wasn’t from Macallan you wouldn’t spend the money. Absolutely nothing wrong with the liquid in the bottle, a delightful first timer scotch. Many, many finer whiskies out there for the price. However no good having a name and not trading on it.

Not as good as fine oak!!!!
I was a long time Macallan Fine Oak fan. Macallan will tell you the Triple Cask is the same, just re-packaged and renamed, I’ve exchanged several emails with them. I promise it is not the same scotch. I’ve consumed the 12, 15 and 18 at this point. I’ve compared them side by side with what I had left of the 15, 17 and even opened my bottle of 21 Fine Oak. There’s a very notable lack of flavor in the new variants. Still very smooth like the Fine Oak but almost completely devoid of flavor.... it’s a very poor evolution of what used to be my favorite scotch. This post makes me very sad.

defiantly recommend.
The tasting note is spot on, this is a lovely single malt if you are trying for the first time, since purchasing i have come to like this and the 18 year old macallan very much.

A good regular
Pretty strong aroma that lures you to it. Smooth and easy on the palate, probably better served neat or with a drop of still water, ice overly dilutes it you miss out on the richness of its content
