Part of a release of just 972 bottles from Laphroaig. This 27 year old was distilled in 1980 and aged in 5 casks used previously to hold Oloroso sherry.
The nose is full and pungent with an unbridled weightiness. The peat is rich and tarry with huge notes of wood oils and medicinal undertones. The coastal character is ubiquitous and with a new degree of refinement. There are herbal notes and a jammy note with a smooth caramel. The sherry notes are rich and creamy. The palate is vast and big-bodied with a superb thickness. Layers of sherried raisins dipped in dark bitter chocolate with notes of winter spice, mocchaccino with an extra shot, the oak is chewy and rich. The finish is long and pungent with more peat and sea spray and a dry tannic oak.
