Lagavulin 16 Year Old

Originally there was a 12 year old expression but when Diageo launched the Classic Malt series in the 1980s,  Lagavulin 16 Year Old was introduced and became the distillery's flagship bottling.

A much sought-after single malt Scotch whisky with the massive peat-smoke that's typical of southern Islay - but also offering richness and a dryness that turns it into a truly interesting tipple. Lagavulin 16 year old has truly become a benchmark Islay dram from the Lagavulin distillery.

If you're looking for a food pairing for this beauty, try intensely flavoured salty blue cheeses, which complement the intense, peat rich, sweet and salty character of this Lagavulin wonderfully.

A classic Scotch whisky, Lagavulin's 16 year old is a benchmark malt from Islay's south coast. This is perhaps more smoky than peaty, and has a wonderful flavour that pertains to Lapsang Souchong tea…

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose More like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong! One of the smokiest noses from Islay. It's big, very, very concentrated, and redolent of iodine, sweet spices, good, mature Sherry and creamy vanilla. Stunning.

Palate Very thick and rich. A massive mouthful of malt and Sherry with good fruity sweetness, but also a wonderful sweetness. Big, powerful peat and oak.

Finish Long, spicy finish, figs, dates, peat smoke, vanilla.

Reviews for Lagavulin 16 Year Old
Everything I had hoped for.
There’s little need for hyperbolae here. As a dyed in the wool fan of all things Islay the 16 year old will hit every note you need from a dram on a wild and stormy night. Strong, bold, and holding its own alongside my favourites.

My favourite Isla
I have quite a few Islas in my cupboard, including the Laphroaig 15, Sherrry 10 YO, Bunahabain, Rare Malts Coal Isla, Ardbeg 1978.

The 78 Ardbeg runs it close, but the Lagavullin 16 is till my favourite ( bought it 20 years ago, so may be better than current offerings)

Delicious Peaty Whiskey
My go to single malt. Lovely peaty whiskey. I drink it with a tiny splash of water.

Amazing Islay
I'm a huge Islay fan and had been waiting to finally try the very highly rated Lagavulin 16...it's really, really great, but I think ever so slightly anticlimactic after so often hearing it heralded so highly. Personally I prefer the Ardbeg Uigeadail and also the Bruichladdich Port Charlotte. Still a solid 4.5 stars though.

A timeless classic. The G.O.A.T
This is the GOAT. Not much else to say. Pound for pound the best whisky on the market.

It's at the premium end of most casual budgets. But this is the one! If you fall on the 'hell yes' side of the peated whisky, marmite-style, fence - then this is the one.

This is not to everyone's taste, and perhaps there are better whiskies out there, but I promise you won't find them at this price. A timeless legend.

Rich and complex
Smoke rather than peat on the nose. Bit of salt, but mostly smoke and sherried sweetness.
Sherried fruit on the palate with developing taste of tanin, smoke, oak and salt. Very well-rounded with layers of different flavours.
Long finish with lasting sweetness.
Great scotch, shame it's gotten so expensive (though still not like Japanese brands).

The best whisky I can think of at this price
It's about 5 years since I'd had this. I remember liking it but not necessarily so much more than Laphroaig, and in the meantime the price seems to have shop up into the stratosphere.
I must admit that I was sceptical when my friend pulled this out, but you know what, I like this. And I'd pay this for it. At least now and again, as a treat!
It's smooth, and pleasantly rich. Nicely integrated phenolics, tar and smoke. Gentle cask influence, and slight licorice in the really long finish

Shadow of it former self
Lagavulin was the first Islay I ever tried so it has a soft spot in my heart. The intensity of smoke was another level. This was the first bottle I bought the day lockdown was announced.

I recently purchased another bottle expecting that same feeling but was disappointed. The intensity of smoke has gone, it tastes rougher and less refined. To make matters worse the price point is now obscene.

I have a new favourite now the Laphropoig 10 year old Sherry Cask. Head and shoulder above Lagavulin

Too Smokey
I read the reviews, and the tasting notes, and felt this was a good fit for me, but the smokeyness is overpowering in my opinion, it drowns out any other flavours. I will continue with Balvenie Caribbean Cask, which, to me, is a well balanced whiskey.
