anCnoc Cutter Bottling Note

Not just another drop in the ocean this - they've been busy brewing (and then distilling) alternatives in the form of peated spirit at Knockdhu for a number of years now, with the latest release being the Cutter - their most heavily peated expression to date (until another hurdle approaches). The phenol content is 20.5 PPM in the bottle and maturation took place in ex-bourbon casks. As with their other peaty releases, it is named after a peat harvesting tool (some of them six foot tall... probably), in this case the Cutter, which is used to cut peat from shallower, drier bogs. The drier peat is easily burnt, producing a whisky with plenty of smoke.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Wafts of iodine, ash and smoke, joined by toffee-dipped peaches and cake-y vanilla sweetness.

Palate: A whisky of three halves (that works, right?): you've got the sooty, smoky peat, you've got bundles of apple, peach and orange, and then you've got plenty of creamy vanilla. It's all balanced and blends together well.

Finish: Long and oily with smokiness simmering to the end.

Overall: We won't spare you the Cutter, it cuts the mustard.

anCnoc Cutter Reviews

Should have bought 2 bottles

Well done anCnoc. Absolutely wonderful bottle. Nose and initial taste are more towards the medicinal peat, think Laphroaig rather than Ardbeg. Sweetish and smooth. Orange and fruit. I haven’t gotten to adding any water but I’ve been quite happy with it as is. I’m sure there are still bottles of this out there so if you haven’t tried it yet please do.

Unique and all gone.

A Whisky on its own . Once are over the surprise you get hooked and then find it has been discontinued. I have a cottage in Sandend and was recommended to this distillery by neighbours. It is very light and to me it is like tasting the sea or the sea air. It's hard to describe but I cannot get enough of it. I hope they make it again because because nothing else is like it.

Gutted it's limited ed.

This is one of the best whiskies ever made. It is peated perfection. Jim Murray called it "Brilliant" gave it a whopping 96.5 in his Whisky Bible, and Jim knows his drams better than anyone! Can't believe that its no longer available. Going to keep my three bottles for very special occasions over the next few decades...unless of course Knockdhu distillery wakes up and makes it a regular!!

Very nice

I'm an amateur and can only states that I find it nicely smoked and no haecy after taste. Very enjoyable.

This is a fantastic Whisky. If you give it 1/2 star, you're tasting it wrong...

You can tell by the reviews that this is a polarizing whisky. What I found is that if you try it without or little water, it is indeed too harsh, but if you add the right amount of water, this is a wonderful whisky. Certainly one of my favourite new tastes

Not a cut above the rest

I am a huge islay fan.. and i can honestly say that this is the worst scottish single malt whisky that i have ever tried. Very harsh taste which overwhelms any potential lingering notes. I now only use this bottle for my airlock when brewing beer.

Great smokey scotch

Quite a tasty journey, smokey, with a fresh fruity finish. This hits all the marks I am looking for in a scotch whiskey. At the price point, it is a fair value.

Be careful what you wish for

very tough & smokey, a bit too much for my liking.
Try the the Rutter version which is not as smokey, I enjoy the less harsh taste of rutter

i dont agree..

I have taste a hole lot of new smokey whiskey sorts and i am very curious when
new tastes are availiby, and therefor, ofcourse i have to taste the Ancnoc Cutter and i can say that i was not disapointed, this whiskey is now one of my favorites, it,s fresch and clear and i am surprised that how long long the taste remain in my mouth, i thougt that this was "like water" how wrong i was, this whiskey is great!! Best Regards Michael

Very disappointing

I have been running a social whisky club for the last year and unfortunately this has taken the title of the least favoured dram we have had to date. I was looking forward to it and expecting something good from the sales Pitch I had from our supplier. There isn't much else to say about it.
