Kilkerran Peated #2

Well-peated whisky here from the Kilkerran range, produced at the Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown. This second Heavily Peated batch weighs in at a robust 60.9% ABV, and boasts plenty of meaty smoke notes all the way through. Wonderful stuff as ever from Glengyle.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Toasty malt with hints of baked earth and crispy bacon. Fresh citrus cuts through the richness.

Palate Roasted apples, thyme, oily barley, waves of peppery smoke.

Finish Softly spicy on the finish, with a touch of ginger.

Reviews for Kilkerran Heavily Peated (Batch 2)
Embrace the differences
The softest nose of the first 3 batches and, as good as it is, it feels lacking

Absolutely get the baked earth and bacon notes but feels like its trying to be a soft islay rather than embracing Campbeltown.

Palate is so much better. So herbal with a lip smacking funkiest that brings you back to the Kilkerran roots. The oils are mouth filling and peppery, it starts to fire your taste buds and the flavour intensify quickly (may be the abv kicking in).

Finishing is fleeting but not in a necessarily bad way. The smoke is there but its an afterthought to the salty brine you are left with. Its pure savoury on the end. Those herbal notes paired with a salty finish is outstanding

Nose is a share but the rest easily makes up for it

Proper whisky
A proper substantial whisky, not peaty like an Islay, more like a smokey Speysider. I get a whiff of bacon on the nose. Easy drinking despite the high abv and equal (perhaps even better) to an Ardbeg Uigidal at £20 less. A real, robust bargain like all Kilkerrans.

Proper Job...
On the nose - whisky
On the palate - whisky
The finish - it's that good, you don't want it to finish! Proper whisky without the ridiculous price tag, if you want va va voom on a glass, hello Hamish...

Essential for a peat fan
Rich and flavourful. Really opens up with water. Strong flavours of peat and malt.

Winner winner
On the nose this is warm oat and raisin cookie, the pear comes second for me and completes the well rounded baked notes really well.

They’ve also managed to control that 60%, it’s not aggressive by any means. It’s wonderfully rounded, this also isn’t a peat monster. Definitely waves of peppery bacon smoke but it’s complimentary of the oily baked fruits, no doubt the 60% helps these flavours hit 11. I’m onboard with this for sure! Also for under £40 a 60% from Campbeltown deserves you’re attention if not just for that!!
