The Taiwanese distillery Kavalan matured their incredible single malt whisky in a top quality Fino Sherry cask to produce an exquisite expression, jam packed with bright, fruity notes. Each bottle includes a handsome presentation case and carry bag. Named Best New World Single Malt Whisky in 2012 by both the World Whiskies Awards and Jim Murray in his Whisky Bible.
Grilled pineapple, cinnamon-topped apple pie, a hint of coastal breeze. Black tea, sultanas and honey.
Juicy fruits galore! Apricot, raisin and plum by the bucket-load. Perhaps a touch of roasted carrot, too... Mocha and buttered popcorn develops later on.
Candied orange peels, brandied cherries and a pinch of sea salt.
$52.14 - $429.15
I will preface by stating that this is the first time I have ever had any single malt from outside the U.K. This one had a good rich creamy aroma with many other flavors, but a very light palate and very little finish. I will say that it was surprisingly smooth for being a cash strength. Surprisingly there was very little sherry flavor. This might be a good drink for someone that likes lighter drinks, or to drink on a very warm day. Again, I may not be appreciating some subtletry of it, because I would rate Glenmorangie Nector d'or as more flavorful for my tastes.
I love asian whiskey, but this isnt twice as good as the sherry cask.
Another amazing malt from Kavalan who have to be a distillery that is talked about in any conversation about who is making the worlds best and most reliable single malt. This is a big and bold Sherry cask aged malt that has flavours more reminiscent of darker sherry than fino cask. The nose comes across like antique cognac, all grapey with rich buttery roasted nuts, dark honeycomb, caramac bars, sherry soaked sultana/raisin, orange blossom dark honey, malty rum fudge and aromatic oak. Big, malty & powerful on the palate with toffee, caramel, dark honey on cinnamon toast, toasted mocha, hazelnut purée, buttery malt loaf & rum butter. The finish goes on forever with notes of caramelised banana, rich buttery nutty oak & again that old cognac grapey note creeps in along with Muscat pudding wine, coffee creams, toasted walnuts & salted caramel. Simply awesome new world single malt. The Whisky Flaneur
