This blend from John Walker & Sons celebrates the brand's 200th anniversary, taking inspiration from its own Old Highland Whisky which was first sold back in the 1860s – it was also the first expression to be housed in the hallmark square bottle with slanted label! A peppery, fruity expression, certainly worthy of celebration.
Touches of Bakewell tart, apricot, and baking spices, with peppery oak in support.
A hit of spice, malt biscuits, and black pepper, with toasted caramelised nuts.
Spicy pepper lingers on the finish.
This is very nice. Soft, sweet and comforting. I don't think this is much older than 8 or 10 years, so it doesn't have much depth, but that's fine for the price because it is good quality and an unusual expression. I would not be surprised if there were very only two or three different single malts in this blend. Honey is the dominant note, with a slightly bitter taste from the (I believe) small amount of grain whisky which adds a dash of interest. However, you must allow this to breath. It is essential. Taken straight out of the bottle without allowing it to open up and soften is not a good idea. I also add a half teaspoon of water to 40ml.
A really fantastic JW this one. Very high ABV great with a drop of water, makes it more juicy.
