Highland Park Valfather Bottling Note

The final bottling from the Viking Legend series, Valfather was named after the Norse god Odin. It's the most peated whisky to date from Highland Park, a style designed to mimic Odin's power. Valfather was matured in refill casks in order to balance the peatiness and also because the brand supposedly wanted to mirror the ethereal and lighter feel of Valhalla, Odin’s hall. It was bottled at 47% ABV without any additional colouring.

Danish designer Jim Lyngvild returned to help create the distinctive packaging, the inspiration of which was the ancient picture stones from Stora Hammars in Gotland, Sweden.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Robust, but refined smoke fills the nose initially followed by delicate vanilla, Conference pears, green apple skins and a heady, heavy floral richness. Underneath there’s cedarwood, honeycomb, spice from black pepper and nutmeg, as well as salted caramel before the heathery peat makes itself known. A sprightly sea breeze note emerges with time.

Palate: Simultaneously huge and yet elegant, the palate is beautifully integrated. Layers of creamy vanilla, apricot yoghurt and a helping of crème brûlée interplay with notes of incense burners, iron and salted almonds. Then there’s bitter orange marmalade, charred wood and dried earth among touches of cacao powder, toffee apples and smoked paprika.

Finish: Long and confident. The floral smoke lingers for an age but is offset by tropical fruit and black pepper.

Highland Park Valfather Reviews

Either a bad bottle or a really bad whisky

I don't know if my bottle is fouled or my perception of a decent, if not good whisky is in stark contrast wih a majority of voters here. No central note, no neat travel between the nose, palate and aftertaste, nothing smooth and rounded. There is a cacophony of flavours, fighting each other, and worst of all... Every sip leaves a distinct feel of acid on the throat which i had never felt with any whisky.
As said, it could be a bad bottle, since the valknut, i had bought at the same time tastes better.

Smooth, caramel flavour

This is a very palatable whisky even for someone like me, definitely not a whisky connoisseur! It has a lovely caramel after taste. Very impressed

A lovely whiskey which can Definetley be enjoyed, if not a little to quickly!

Reminds me of the old talisker, all but slightly less Smokey. Vanilla and sweetness, with a wonderful kick. Floral note after a while before encouraging another sip.

Decent enough 'every day' dram, good for NAS

Decent enough 'every day' dram, leave for about 15+ minutes to open up/oxidize in the glass.
Then on the nose, blast of vanilla, raisins, raspberry candy, hints of butterscotch but no peat!
On the palate dried fruits, hints of toffee, vanilla, slight bitterness and winter spice followed by light peat, leather arm chair, coal, hint of soot.
The finish is short but its NAS, so i'm not really expecting one. A few drops of water however improves this dram, would buy again if on offer.
On a side note, If you are slightly curious on more HP/Peat expressions, i would recommend the '17 year old (the dark)', its outstanding but pricey.

Oh wow

I poured it. I was disappointed with the nose but give it a moment then wow. Really Smokey lovely slightly peaty flavours. I love it

You cannot go wrong with this

Since i am into whisky, I am always excited to discover "the new" Highland Park. Is seems that every year, if not every 6 month, they come with an additional bottle on sale.
It is a very good whisky, typical Highland Park profile and like it, although i find it to miss a little something to be perfect. It reminds me the Valknut with more earthy peat present, at least on the nose and yet more floral and elegant notes, a bit like Japanese whisky. In the great world of highland Park NAS, I think the Dark Origin stay my favorite so far.

A must try

Possibly my favourite Highland Park. The flavours are intense yet amazingly balanced. Already need to buy another bottle.

Irresistible

Delicious, butterscotch, rich, sumptuous, the only issue, it won't last long, mine didn't.
