Glenmorangie Spìos

The ninth release in Glenmorangie's Private Edition series is the Spìos (which means 'spice' in Scots Gaelic). This flavoursome single malt is notable for being fully matured in casks that previously held rye whiskey! Not just any rye whiskey, mind you. Glenmorangie's Dr. Bill Lumsden picked casks used to age whiskey made from a 95% rye mash bill for six years as the maturation vessels for the Spìos.

This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Reviews for Glenmorangie Spìos Private Edition
My favourite
Tasted most of the Glenmorangie's, including eight out of ten from the private edition, and to me this is definitely the best.

Sort it out ...
Good evening chaps. After the purchase of the Balcata, and this year sampling a few drams of the Spios whilst reminiscing over previous Private Edition greats I'd frankly say the wheels are falling of the wagon . Sort it out.

Terrible, no flavour.
I'm very disappointed with this whiskey. I've had a few Private Editions and really loved them, they have been varied but always unique and full of wonderful flavours, depth and layers. Not this one. It tastes of nothing other than alcohol! No overnotes, undernotes or inbetween notes. No notes at all. Nothing. It might as well be vodka. Is there such a thing as a bad barrel?? If there is I have definitely drawn the short straw.

Ignorable
Very undergunned. Some might call is subtle but the other way to describe this is insipid. Some orange notes on the nose and the rest of it tastes perfectly smooth and quaffable, but nothing to challlenge you and no real complexity on the finish. There have been some great private editions but not this alas. 10-y-o is twice the whisky for half the price.

My first taste I was not impressed but this drink has grown on me. Taste of cloves is there

Spicy Smooth
Very nice, respectable dram. Tough to follow up on bacalta but this does it for me as someone who enjoys a Rye Whiskey. Very smooth on the palat with a lingering spice finish. Isn't overly complex but doesn't need to be as this isn't something I've tried before or can immediately compare something to. Already looking forward to next year's #10.

Just a bit.... meh....
Arrived today, together with the Glenmorangie Astar 2017, had a side-by-side tasting. Liked them both but the Astar was better. The Spios was sort of one-dimensional, sweet malt and fudge, a bit of spice builds initially on the palate but dies fast. Just a bit "meh". The lowest wrung on the Private Edition ladder.

Doesn't compare to previous Private Editions..... Disappointed!
Really really disappointed with this one!!!
I'm a huge fan of Glenmorangie, and have collected for a fair few years now, always looking forward to the new private editions, i normally buy 2, one for me and one for the shelf.
Popped into The Soho Whisky Club last night for a wee dram and oh the disappointment.
Its basic, its bland, it just isn't anything special at all, i'd rather pop to tesco and get a bottle of the original, or two for the price!
Picked a bottle up for the shelf, but didn't feel the need to buy one for me! Poor show.
