GlenDronach The Hielan' Bottling Note

Unveiled in mid-2015, GlenDronach's The Hielan' is a rather handsome entry level 8 year old single malt from the Highland distillery's range, matured and married in bourbon and Sherry casks. Delightfully buttery with a good helping of chewy raisin and almond notes at its core, joined by touches of citrus and spice.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Honey'd malt, vanilla fudge and citrus peels. Slightly chocolate-y raisin notes and a little cinnamon.

Palate: More spice comes through on the palate, but the vanilla-rich buttery elements remain up front. Freshly baked biscuits topped with almonds and plump sultanas.

Finish: Quite long, with Sherried fruit and ginger lasting.

GlenDronach 8 Year Old The Hielan' Reviews

Big bold sherry bomb.

I bought this for €27, and at this price it’s very, very good.

It’s quite young and high abv, so prepare for a kick. Best deluded with a fair amount of water and given some time in the glass.

Sherry, oak, vanilla, ginger, cinnamon, orange, almonds. It’s got a very pungent arrival and a big dry finish, that lingers long.

Definitely not a smooth “pleaser to everyone” I guess, but raw quality.

A great bold entrance sherry whisky, that deserves attention, and appreciation.

Great nose and taste Bold 8 yr old

Picked this up on a let's have a look see, as the profile sounded interesting and it was going to be discontinued at our BC liquor store and I'm so pleased I did.
For an 8 yo this is fantastic.
The tasting notes are a great guide, though I can't pick every single reference, overall it seems like it has all the notes and more. Orangey oak (that I love) on the nose, yes buttery or is that a brandy butter hmm, and the sultanas.
On the palate soft oak, orange again, dried grapey fruits and the smooth creamy buttery vanilla. On the finish, as the lovely orangey oaky taste lingers quite long, a suggestion that you may have just drunk a sherry with it's hints of nuttiness comes in ….really nice and long.
This is a bold youngster! Love that GD put this out with the 8 yo age statement, I'm 8 years and no BS about me, 46%, natural colour and non shill filtered, great.
At the price this youngster definitely punches above its weight, and is better than many a 12 & 15 yr old! Well done GD.

Great young un.

Stunning, for the price and age this is marvellous. Little drop of water and give it time and it develops beautifully.

Fantastic sherries malt!

I’ve been a fan of the glendronach since I brought my dad a bottle of the 18 year old a few years back!so I thought I would see what a younger expression would be like!im glad I did it’s wonderful being a higher abv has helped but you get gorgeous sherry sweetness right from the first sip and the finish slowly melts away leaving you wanting more and more!o highly recommend this malt and everything from this distillery wonderful stuff!

Stretch to the 12

I have been having a moan over the past few years about the proliferation of NAS malt whiskies, some of which are fine while others just shouldn't have been released. So, I was pleased to see Glendronach, one of my favourite distillers, being brave enough to release a stated 8 year old, especially at 46% and non-chillfiltered. That said, though, I can't say that I enjoyed this dram, especially at over £36. I had some friends round and we were trying various malts (all around this price point) and this was the one that got slated for being really rough and really not ready for drinking. Personally, I wouldn't go so far as that but nowhere near as good as the 12yo at only £2 more. As with all things whisky, these are only opinions!

One of my favourites

Wonderfull nose, warm mouthfilling taste. I taste hints of cacao, slices, nuts (almond?) and sweet stuff. I like the different batches of flavours coming in every sip. And with rhe quiet long finish the journey is complete. I would have guessed an older whisky in a blind taste too. Value for money, I run in to this bottle coincidentely, but it in my collectioneur permently now.

Ad(r)am

Rich and velvety smooth, with more raisins than Mary Berry's pantry. 8 years is practically ancient in todays whisky terms, but had I tasted blind (and not noticing the lighter hue) I would have judged this to be older. And for just over £30? Buy it! Lovely long finish too. Not sure where the bourbon cask influence is, but thats no bad thing in my eyes.
