Smooth through and through

I have loved Dickel for close to two decades. Smooth, mellow , and truly one of the great sipping whiskey choices out there. I appreciate the sweet maple charcoal used to filter the Dickel . Oak and vanilla , spice and leather. Goerge Dickel; make your pickle tickle

Smooth, deep, and still hand made the hard way

The hidden gem (with the tradition to back it) of Tennessee Whisky! The No. 12 is amazing; No. 8 is just as good, but with different features; Barrel Select is even smoother and more caramelly. This brand is my new go-to. Their process isn’t computerized, and the company is tiny and close-knit.

Go git it.

Just exceptional whiskey; very fairly priced. Not bourbon, not jack, but a unique banana, honeyed, hazelnut, marzipan riot of flavors. A wee burn 3/4 of the way in, but for 33 beans it’s a deal.

A definite "must have" here in the US, notes of hazelnut

I am newer to American whiskies (bourbon and rye) coming from Scotch single malts (I am in the US, though). But I have about a dozen of bourbons and a handful of ryes in my collection.

The numbers on Dickel bottles are not age, they are "No. 8" and "No. 12" - from my research "No. 8" is aged 4+ years and No. 12 is aged 8+ years, but perhaps this is not verifiable.

I really like No. 12 and Dickel Rye (MGP, Indiana distillate). This No. 12 is pleasant and complex and although I am not great with multiple tasting notes I get a distinct and lovely note of hazelnut, almost as if this was a natural hazelnut liqueur. But not cloying sweet.

Speaking of E150a - as far as I know none of the US better spirits are even allowed to have it (what are we, Europe?). Maybe the rotgot "blended" bottles, but not any of the straights - so bourbons and ryes are safe (search for Templeton scandal and check US whiskey legal definitions). And bourbons and ryes are aged in virgin oak barrels, so they are dark enough - caramel colorant just not needed.

As to chill-filtration, again, I'd argue this is different here. The undesirable and much-maligned (rightly so) chill-filtration of Scotch is a new phenomenon, not traditional, and was devised for cosmetic reasons - to prevent cloudiness in the bottle (allowing bottling at 40%) and in the glass - for those who use their Scotch as ice melt. The Dickel chill-filtering was born out of Lincoln County Process (filtering through sugar maple charcoal) - with Dickel noticing that their whisky was tastier when filtered in winter months. If true, this would make this a desirable feature, devised for reasons of taste/flavor. And again, virgin oak whiskey is so dark, I'm not sure anyone would notice the "Appalachian mist" to care.

FWIW I also tried giving Jack Daniels a chance - bought a sampler with No.7, Gentleman Jack and Single Cask. Solventy and harsh to me, like vanilla-flavored model airplane glue. Just nasty. Sorry, no offense to all the "Jack and Coke" blokes, I'm sure that cola masks all of that nicely. But you'll pay less with Dickel ;)

Great tasting bourbon once you get used to it.

My first taste was a bit overwhelmed by the "smokey oak" taste. But since drinking it for a while now, it is absolutely fantastic. I was surprised at the price listed here as I got the 1.75l for $41 at ABC Liquors in Crystal River, Florida in January, 2018. I will definitely buy it again.

The other Tennessee Whiskey

Presentation: The bottle has a long neck, almost half the height of the squat bottle. It is made from clear glass with 'George Dickel' embossed on the shoulder. I love the label on this bottle; it looks like something straight out of the Wild West. Very cool. The whiskey has no age statement but it is claimed to be aged 'years longer' than George Dickel No. 8. Importantly, the '12' in the name does not mean it has been aged for 12 years.

Appearance: Dark golden orange in colour. There is no indication of e150 caramel colouring being added, but it does say 'chill-filtered' on the label; so is Jack Daniels.

Aroma: Sweet, lots of vanilla and a bit of caramel. Hint of spice.

Flavour: Smooth and sweet with a sudden hit of spice on the top of the mouth. Flavours of vanilla and oak spice. No smoke, but kind of a sweet burnt caramel in there somewhere. Most people would probably drink this with a mixer or on ice (which is fine) but that will change what it tastes like obviously. Personally, I usually drink this straight over ice.

Finish: Very long bourbon aftertaste, with fading spice.

Would I buy it again?

Yes, I love drinking this over ice on a hot evening or as a Highball (with soda water). I think it both smells and tastes great. If you are a Jack Daniels drinker but have never tried George Dickel, I would add this to the top of your wish list. I am very keen to try the other expressions in the George Dickel range.

A hidden gem

This is one of my favourites. It blows Jack out of the water. The price is right as well. It's on par with, or better than, most bourbons I've had. I'm in love with the smoke, leather, tobacco and buttered corn flavours.

Full flavor and long finish

A great whisky, one of my favorites. It is my day-to-day "go to" drink because of the flavor, it outshines Jack Daniels and is bargain priced because it flies under the radar and is not as widely marketed. The 8 year old is very good, the 12 is wonderful.
