Elijah Craig was named for a reverend who lived in Virginia. He kept a warehouse where he stored barrels and one day experienced a devastating fire. He used the charred casks regardless and found they imparted a lovely character. This is a great 12 year old small batch bourbon, named in his honour.
Nose: Quite thick and full. There is a beautiful sweetness with notes of toasty oak, toffee, spicy stewed fruits, a touch of resin and a lovely crème anglaise character.
Palate: Full and sublimely smooth with notes if stewed Bramley apples, malmsey, a touch of aniseed and a hint of spice.
Finish: Good length with toasty oak notes and a creamy sweetness.

Awful, taste like cheap jim bean....
15th March 2017
Well the 12 is still available as I've just bought another bottle. This is my favourite Bourbon. I won't bore you with any pretentious tasting notes, but suffice to say it's full flavoured, rounded, and more going on than with other Bourbon's I've tried in a simlar price range. I would say though that if you are just looking for smooth and sweet this probably isn't the one for you. If you like some oakiness and spiciness then it probably is.
12th December 2016
I drank your bourbon for the first and only time at a dinner party and I liked how smooth it was on my throat and I was struck by how smooth it was and not hostile in burning my throat. I'm going to go to get some of your drink for my personal use and thank you for steering me to your product.
11th November 2016
Dear Elijah Craig followers, I am Canadian, purchased a 1.7L bottle of 12 year Old Elijah Craig in Clemmons N/C about 15 years ago, as a product that was not available in Canada at that time. I enjoy whiskey as a drink, however. my brother who lives in western Canada is finally coming to Ontario for a visit and the bottle of E C is still untapped. My brother is the Bourbon drinker! and has never tried your product, as he likes Jim Bean or Makers Mark. After all this time the test of time and Quality will arrive in a few weeks and I just hope the quality after all this time has not diminished. Respond to this message, then i will let you know his response to your product.Best to you AllJoe

If you want to let someone know they mean a great deal to you, this would be a gift that speaks to something unique and stormproof. It is smooth, creamy and honest with a taste that lingers just long enough to make you smile and think "life is good" but sometimes it is "VERY good".
16th October 2016
Fairly new to Bourbons - this is probably the 6th or 7th I've tried, and the oldest. At first opening there was a bit of a nip to it and the wood notes dominated - very nutty. I'm about 2/3's way down the bottle now and it seems this bourbon is really settling and opening up nicely. The wood notes are more in balance and some nice toffee and spice noes come through. Thickish, creamy mouth-feel and the finish in particular is fairly long, sweet and with a nice wood spice dryness. A couple of drops of water seem to really help this.
8th October 2016
Excellent! Smooth and full bodied with a nice finish. An under appreciated gem, in my opinion.
6th October 2016
I ordered an orange old fashion. Never having one I told the bar man to give me whatever his best liquor was. I'm a lemon drop-kind of girl so I can't say it was my favorite. But the taste of the old-fashion was smooth, not bitter. The best part is where it hits you. It leaves you relaxed without seeing double.
2nd October 2016
Awesome 12 year old smooth and with a subtle bite to enhance sipping at its best.
30th September 2016
Excellent! Smooth and full bodied with a nice finish. An under appreciated gem, in my opinion.
18th September 2016
Excellent! Noobs should stick with Makers Mark, but a bourbon vet will enjoy this bourbon neat.
17th September 2016
Hi there, thanks for the review! However, this most certainly is a 12 Year Old Bourbon - all the products we sell are as pictured, and you will see on the bottle label in our photo that this is indeed a 12 Year Old. The Chaps @ Master of Malt
2nd September 2016
First of all, it isn't 12 years old anymore. It doesn't say 12 years anywhere on the bottle. I wasn't that impressed. It was fairly good but nothing special.
WOW first time a beautiful bourbon. Having it at the Novotel Hotel Manhattan. Both place and bourbon awesome a must try
20th June 2016
What wonderful flavor! Introduced from a friend who knew my husband and I liked Woodford Reserve...very, very nice!
10th June 2016
In this price range, Buffalo Trace has been my go-to bourbon. But I wanted to try this label as I heard some good things. From the first sniff, I knew I was in for a potent whiskey. Hint of paint thinner on the nose, very strong and not all that pleasant. A lot of heat going down, a bit harsh on the tongue and nose. Be prepared for that. After that, some nice sweet notes and a full taste. But the finish is not the greatest. This whiskey reminds me of Knob Creek straight bourbon, a high proof whiskey that's also too potent, IMO. I was left with that dreaded whiskey headache. Ugh. I fear this bottle will last me a long time. My first glass did not leave me craving another.
3rd June 2016
I have been a bourbon drinker for 20+ years, but the last 10 I have really expanded my experience and palate. I just bought my first bottle of E.C.12 this week, a bourbon I have been curious about for some time. I cracked it today and it was OUTSTANDING. Toasty nose, full up front, little bite and one of the best finishes I have ever had. This will be my campfire whiskey for the summer. I set it next to my Van Winkle and there is no doubt which one will be empty first. Well done.
4th May 2016
Classic old fashioned smell, full and rich as you'll find. Sweet on the nose like an English dessert, custard alongside dried fruit notes, I pick up a slight grassy/hay note in the background. The complexity of the nose is proven to me as I find it reminiscent of a candy store, an open field on a hot summer day, as well as fresh glazed meats. Warming, buttery mouthfeel with the taste near identical to the nose. Spicy, not in a rye way, rather a dry oak imparted spice that develops through to the finish. Damn lovely. Finishes long, spicy smooth. Harsh is the last word that comes to my mind with this, but of course, we all have unique and personal tastes with our own experiences to judge by. I find it's damn good stuff. 9.5/10
3rd May 2016
I'm a makers drinker and just love this. Maybe my favorite now.
27th April 2016
Nice bite, but smooth aftertaste. Excellent bourbon!
17th April 2016
Great bourbon for money!
27th March 2016
When I tasted this bourbon at Heaven Hill I wrote in my tasting notes "taste like grass". This bourbon just isn't good. I'd much rather have Old Granddad or Eagle Rare.
15th March 2016
I was very excited to try one of the most talked about and affordable bourbons on the market. I'm fairly new to the exciting Bourbon world, I had polished off both my Eagle Rare & Woodford Reserve Distillers Select prior to uncorking my Elijah. I'm no expert but certainly and appreciator. I'm also a straight up & neat Bourbon man. It started off so smooth, it was magic. The nose was faint and you could really get down deep into it. The first sip was soft on the palate but grabbed you in all the right places and very long finish. I could've sworn I'd found my go-to-bourbon. Then it all collapsed like a jenga game. I've never had this happen; it had a transition. After each uncorking the bourbon would be a little more harsh (on the nose & palate). It lost many of its noticeable nuances and playfulness. It's become very cowboy like. I've added more variety to my collection and this has yet to happen like it did to my Elijah. (All stored in one spot) The cork issue is almost a running joke, the plastic bit separated from the cork and now I have to pry the cork each centimeter at a time.
8th March 2016
I drink my Bourbon chilled with ice, three or four shakes only, then quickly strained and transferred to a chilled glass. This is a great Bourbon this way, smooth and wonderful with delicious lasting notes of yummy!
11th February 2016
Heaven scent on the palate, dancing with toasty notes of charry apple and divine sweetness
6th February 2016
For an average priced bourbon this is a far superior product to makers and knob. It is a very sweet burning. Pretty good with a drop or 2 of water.
29th January 2016
I have been a bourbon drinker for decades and have pretty much tried them all. Despite the fact that this whiskey is aged for 12 years, I don't find it particularly smooth. In fact, to me it is rather harsh with a strong alcohol taste and little else. Compared to Weller 12 year old, which is becoming very hard to find, it doesn't come close in any way. If you want a strong "high octane" type bourbon, stick with Knob Creek. Evan Williams Single Barrel, which is ten years old and less expensive, is far superior. It is a much more sophisticated bourbon. Even run of the mill Makers Mark is far superior to Elijah Craig. This 12 year old whiskey is totally disappointing.
28th January 2016
The 12-year age statement is going be dropped from this. The whiskey will in future be made up of whiskey 8 to 12 years old, and will be sold NAS. If you have a problem with that, you better stock up on the 12-year-old stuff while you can.
25th January 2016
Excellent whisky by any standard, but astonishingly good for the price.
24th January 2016
I enjoyed it a lot!
18th January 2016
This bourbon is perfect. It has the best bite, full, sweet, rich finish of any I have tried.
9th January 2016
As a regular Maker's 46 drinker, a coworker recommended Elijah Craig as an alternative and I found it on sale for $22 at our local Bevmo (regular price closer to $28). Makers 46 sells for $30 to $38 so I decided to take my coworkers suggestion and try EC and so far I've been pleasantly surprised. I'm only a few glasses into the bottle, so I'm not quite sure if I like it as much as Makers 46 yet but this is definitely leagues better than other bourbons in the sub $30 price range. Beautiful color, bit of a spicy burn, not as super smooth as higher end bourbons but again, for the price a ton better than expected. Looking forward to trying the 18 year version.
19th December 2015
Making my way through the 2015 Advent Calendar (what may have become a new tradition in our household) and both the wife and I found the Elijah Craig one of the few so far which warrant further exploration. The wife isn't a fan of whiskey, but agreed to share the adventure of sampling with me (this year, at least) and has declared Elijah Craig 12 a winner (though there is still roughly half the samples left).Nice nose, fruity tones and a smooth tasty finish make the Elijah Craig a standout.
16th December 2015
Sniff: Yup, that's bourbon! Little smoke from the cask, little burnt wood astringency, but nose-hair singing hot. Had to put it in a more open glass. Took another whiff, that's better, still hot, but now some oak and caramel coming out. Brief hints at vanilla, is that a touch of apricot stone, banana, and oh yah leather. No way I can smell that many things in this, can I, crazy. Great big nose.Sip, honey, hot, let it sit on the tongue, burn, mellow out, sweet, citrus, nice fruits, and it sits a bit chewy in the mouth with a good buttery texture that isn't oily.Relax, breath, what an after taste, more citrus and stone fruits. Love it.Wait a bit, add a drop of water, the heat mellows out, but the flavor opens up more really well.Final Note: I am doing the 2015 advent calendar. As a result, I get one drink at it to decide if I like it enough to buy more. Sometimes I need to drink something three or four times to make up my mind. Thus, my rating is based on a one-time drink experience.
5th December 2015
Really enjoyable, warming dram at a good price.
4th December 2015
Strong tasting, but not a good taste
Best bottle for the price
3rd December 2015
Earthy tone oak flavors with a bit of fruit not as smooth as makers mark, better mixed than neat or over ice, even prefer a blended crown royal over Elijah
Got a bottle of this for my 40th off my Brother and his family. Absolutely sublime stuff. Wipes the floor with Jack, Jim Beam etc. Fantastic finish which will linger for 5 mins+
26th November 2015
I am a bourbon fan, and I try a good many. Tonight, I am enjoying my first bottle of Elijah Craig, and I must say, I think this is a winner!
24th November 2015
I buy this on a regular basis now and recommend it to friends. Great with a good cigar and for less than $30.
25th October 2015
Love it but the stopper and the top seprate at times. Still love the taste!!!
15th October 2015
I normally drink single malt scotch but really love a taste of Elijah Craig - better value than Knob Creek 9YO small batch
18th September 2015
I paid a friend $5 for my bottle and got a really good perk so I'm a satisfied customer
23rd July 2015
what a drink!...smooth and slightly sour with a silky corn taste on the finish when neat . ...a bit of water opens up nutty ,toffee notes with a slight popcorn honey finish absolutely excellent top grade ,small batch bourbon . and can hold it's own up against any of the big whiskey ..even single malts !!
2nd July 2015
I have been trying different Bourbon and Rye whiskeys for a while now. I saw this one and immediately noticed a few things: 1) Good color, very solid and dark enough. 2) Cork, nothing says pride and quality like a cork instead of screw top, means nothing to the flavor its just a nice touch. 3) 12 years. Most are 6-9 it seems so this stood out.It is very tasty and smooth. I certainly feel the thickness noted above. My recommendation is you pour some, and let it sit for a few minutes. It really mellows out and the aroma sweetens considerably.
18th June 2015
I'm a whiskey drinker but a co-worker recommended I try bourbon. We spent 30 minutes in the liquor store & I purchased Elijah Craig Small Batch 12. My first sip was extremely smooth & I think I found my new drink.
2nd May 2015
The hubs and I tried this at a hotel. We love Whiskey and trying new brands. The bartender suggested this one and my I am sure glad she did! It is super smoothe with great flavor! Our new favorite!
28th April 2015
I normally drink single malt scotch but tried a taste of Elijah Craig at my local store. Promptly took home a bottle. Yummy!
26th April 2015
a nice drop but not worth the crazy $72 price (fuck Australia and our rip off prices!) still one of the better bourbons iv had so far but for the price I'd have 2 say I'd rather buy bakers
23rd April 2015
Excellent bourbon, normally on the rock.
22nd March 2015
I'm not a bourbon fun, but this is the best bourbon I've ever tasted!!!
10th March 2015
This is very cool. Elijah Craig was my 5th great grandfather's brother. My 5th great grandfather was Benjamin Craig. We will check it out. :)
5th March 2015
As a old time bourbon drinker this is not the best i have in my bourbon collection but it one that will stay
20th February 2015
really nice, strong and goes well with beef steak,I like the smell and the color of Elijah Craig whiskey, smooth and heart warming, fine bottle.
30th January 2015
This is the kind of whiskey where you may need a second glass to truely appreciate every note. It is 47%, remember, so adding a drop of water may bring out more subtleties. Swish it around in your mouth, hold it on your tongue - then swallow :) Great whiskey, if you ask me. Would I buy it again? Yes!
22nd January 2015
better than woodford reserve to me. a bourbon way better than all the hype others get. cant wait to share with friends on new years. was very suprised i was never told about this bourbon , will be sure to make others aware of what they are missing
22nd December 2014
Very nice Bourbon, It is a nice change from Jack or other Popular Boubons. I would suggest drinking it clean or on the rocks, no mixer
13th December 2014
Received a bottle over Thanksgiving, tried it on the rocks, slowly sipping as the ice chilled it. Wow! What a great present to receive. It is smooth and somewhat complex and just very pleasing. A second glass to enjoy even slower is a must!
3rd December 2014
Take your time with this bourbon. Take my advice and always drink a second glass. Open your mouth and rest your lips on the glass and breathe in the fragrance of this one through your nose. Take a sip and press it onto your tounge several times, then swallow it. You can taste vanilla a lot, the cask of oak, spices, leather, a tiny floral note. This bourbon is very creamy and has a burn that does not burn. Bourbon drinkers will know what I mean about the burn. Very good for a bourbon under $30.00. Excellent buy for a 12 year old. Try Elijah Craig 12, you won't be sorry.
2nd December 2014
Watch Jason Pyle, Ralfy, or the Whisky Bitch for tasting and nosing notes. I just wanted to say this is the first bourbon I've ever had that I thought to myself, "I must NEVER be without this". 9/10.
3rd November 2014
Great nose - sweet and full of stewed apples, sugar, spice, toffee..and all things nice..smooth as a Southern afternoon...addictive taste (one hit and you'll want to drink this forever).. And a lovely long lingering finish. This is also cheap, but that doesn't mean it's lacking substance or style. Great stuff indeed
30th October 2014
Чудовий насичений та досить м'який бурбон! Краще додати кілька крапель води.
20th October 2014
love it! used to drink beam green label but this bourbon is a favorite now.
13th October 2014
I generally prefer scotch but this bourbon is very smooth with a lot of flavor.
11th October 2014
I ran this tasting with two drams. The first was on a dry palate, and it was a little overwhelming with the 47% alcohol content. However, after adding a drop of water, the sweetness and oaky bourbon aromas were opened up sublimely on both nose and palate. My second glass, however, was consumed at full strength on a wet palate. After knowing what to expect from dram one helped my taste buds decipher all the subtle nuances of this 12 year old spirit.Tasting notes do include the toffee banana mentioned by the previous reviewer, however my speyside single malt-influenced palate managed to pick up that wonderful oakiness with more sweetness in the main palate and finish. Overall, I would recommend and scotch drinkers to first try the Glendronach 21 in order to prepare themselves for the fire of the alcohol content, and to prepare their mouths with a splash of water in their first glass. I am trully impressed.
9th September 2014
We are so sorry that the bourbon didn't quite meet your expectations and it is certainly something we would like to have a chat with you about! 27th August 2014
I'm a regular single malt drinker, Speyside or Highland, and this is my first, and last, bourbon. From a nose of airfix glue and toffee vodka, through a palate of rough spirit alcohol and cheap toffee banana flavouring to a mouth burning finish and horrible metallic aftertase, this was truly the worst whisky I've ever sampled. I'm no expert, but even to my modest palate this was undrinkable. If Master of Malt wont take it back for testing, its going down the sink.
22nd August 2014
Elijah Craig is an excellent bourbon! Like a previous reviewer stated, it incites a definite WOW moment. Craig is sweet, smokey, leathery, and jam packed with charred oak flavours. The nose includes fruits, vanilla and memories of a leather saddle shop. I have yet to find a bourbon in my city in Canada that will come close to Elijah Craig. It will be a staple in my collection for years to come.

9th April 2014
It's a short drive to Kentucky from here in SE Tennessee. The price here is $27. (About 16.87 pounds) Location, location, location! I like it. It's full bodied, yet smooth as silk.
3rd March 2014
this whiskey is very good value,it is a very goodintroduction the bourbon
16th February 2014
a good friend got me a bottle of the 12 Year old small batch and it has to be the perfect slow sipping bourbon has a great start and finish
30th January 2014
I have bought this as a present on the advise of reviewers for a loved one who is a big Bourbon drinker, I could not order on this site as too late to arrive for Christmas so went to Selfridges where this was £48! Luckily I was stood next to a very nice man who suggested I go to M&S where I purchased it for £25.99!My purse is having a very merry Christmas!
23rd December 2013
A great bourbon with a sweet, but grassy nose. A rich palate which is smooth and easy to sink, then a long sweet finish.Suffice to say, the bottle didn't last long. Will definitely buy again.
11th December 2013
Can buy this whiskey at M&S Marks&Spencer for less then £27 and it's a expensive shop. The masters of Malts should do much better..then M&SSzarik
30th November 2013
i used to drink scotch and single malt when i could afford, for the last 4 /5 years my taste buds are craving for bourbon - i live in Toronto, where the price is high and the supply is 5% of what you find in the US, having said that i have had the opportunity to drink some of the known and the unknown ones - this is very close to my hear, can't describe you the taste unlike other reviewers; but if complexity and smoothness go hand in had - this is the one!
21st November 2013
Trying this bourbon for the first time. Excellent body and taste for just $27, this one is best bang for the buck u can find in US!
17th October 2013
this is for sale for £23,77 in Germany and the Netherlands a hefty £12,32 difference!!!!
13th October 2013
This whiskey is a welcome surprise! Cheerio and chip chip churee!
11th October 2013
This is noway near as good as Pappy Van Winkle. In the Uk Pappy is hard to find is there anything else similar?
26th September 2013
Love this stuff. Better than Woodford reserve & Pappy. So rich, sweet & creamy.
22nd August 2013
I got this after reading the positive reviews. What a flavor! It's so smooth and creamy I could hold it and swirl it in my mouth for hours the after taste is rich and defined, smoky, woody, sweet & fruity. Absolute bargain and better than some at 4X the price.
one of the finest I've ever had
16th August 2013
Thanks Master of Malt !! :-D

31st July 2013
All time favourite. Totally awesome bourbon. 10/10
10th July 2013
Not keen on the £10 price hike - poor show, this was £27 a few months back
13th June 2013
This is an excellent example of what Bourbon can be. Full bodied and rich, with all of the flavors you expect a bourbon to have. One of my favorites especially since I live in the U.S. where I can get this for $25 USD.
3rd May 2013
I really enjoyed this bourbon although it is not my favorite. I like a few bourbons better including Knob Creek and Evan Williams 10 year old Single Barrel. It's all a matter of personal taste. Elijah Craig is high up on my list of the best.
16th April 2013
Strong Oak (at least for a Bourbon), Salt, Caramel and in the end Vanilla as well as a gentle smoke note that stays in my mouth for several minutes after the brown liquid went down my throat. A "must have" for all Bourbon lovers
12th April 2013
This was given to me by a very good friend and have to agree this is a very fine bourbon. I agree with the banana flavour - like a banana soaked in a sweet liqueur and cooked on a barbeque, "hot and smokey". It is so smooth, and the after-taste is just as good as the initial flavour. Well done my friend!
28th March 2013
A wonderful bourbon
25th January 2013
The nose is really salted caramel. Best tasted with half as much room temperature water to get the full benefit of the complex flavour and aftertaste: a real winner.
3rd January 2013
Tried this whilst watching Avengers Assemble. Have to agree with the other reviewer. I got banana and caramel sweetness kicks as well. This is a cracker of a Bourbon. It's one that makes you go WOW (Thats a CAPITAL WOW) for a first time tasting. Yum Yum. Even made the film seem better than it was! Maybe had too much );-}
25th October 2012
This is certainly a strong and fiery Bourbon! A delightfully smoky, caramel nose. To me it tastes quite strongly of bananas as well as caramel and oak. Strongly recommend. Will be buying this for years to come!
11th October 2012
I have to be honest that my first taste of this Elijah Craig made me wonder if I was out of my comfort zone. Lovely smooth flavor, then it had a really strong kick (a real eye opener), but then the aftertastes kick in and they are delightful. Easily one of my favorite bourbons and will definitely be back for more!
