This is a limited edition bottling of Douglas Laing's Big Peat blended malt, made exclusively with whiskies distilled on the isle of Islay, released in celebration of Fèis Ìle 2018. It's bottled at 48% ABV (slightly stronger than the original Big Peat) and comes with a sheet of stickers that you can use to customise the presentation tube. Neat!
Nose: Oily peat with a crackle of cinnamon bark underneath. Buttery at points.
Palate: Seaweed, oatcakes, Demerara sugar and Frazzles.
Finish: Soot, meaty malt, sea salt and a slight hint of grilled lemon.

What a great whisky and beautiful label! New to Islay whisky but this one has won me over and converted me to all things Islay!

Despite the branding, this is not an outrageously strongly peated Scotch. The nose is not aggressive, and maritime notes can be detected through the phenols. Taste is also not overly assertive, with some sweetness and almost green fruit notes developing, and less strength/overall 'burn' to the palate than your average Laphroaig or even Ardbeg. Not the most intense of finishes. I don't mean to damn this with faint praise - I think this is a pretty good choice for regular drinkers and not only peat-heads, with the obvious caveat that not everybody likes even a moderate peated flavour, as the previous reviewer(s) have shown.

What the hell is a person who clearly doesn’t like peated whisky reviewing a highly peated whisky?! The person is a moron! I purchased two bottles of this a while back and breaking one out tonight. This is why my rating will currently be “None”. It’s like a lactose intolerant person reviewing milk! “The milk gave me terrible gas; 1 Star!”. Idiots!

Ideal for a peat freak.

Take a decent bottle of Scotch, rinse out a used ashtray and voila!!! The tasting notes mention "soot" and they're not wrong.
